More Scanning Electron Microscope fun!

Last week, we unboxed our brand new Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). We broke it in by scanning a Native American artifact from Florida. We hope to continue to better understand artifacts in our collections. Our new SEM will certainly be an integral component of future research here at the FSU Department of Anthropology.

Congratulations to Dean Falk on winning the 2026 President’s Book Award in the Science and Nature category for her book, The Botanic Age!

Falk, a leading evolutionary anthropologist, explores botanical innovations in weaving and woodworking that likely predated the Stone Age. These practices set the neurological groundwork for the cognitive abilities like creativity that define us as humans.

Congratulations to the FSU Department of Anthropology's Dean Falk, who recently won the Florida Authors and Publishers Association gold medal for her book, "The Botanic Age!"

As an evolutionary anthropologist, Falk's research on the fossil record has taken her to museums in Africa, Europe and Asia. Much of her research focuses on the evolution of the human brain, or paleoneurology, and the associated emergence of language, music, art and science.
