Congratulations to Florida State University's 2026 National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award winners, all six of whom are from the FSU College of Arts & Sciences!

The award is one of the most prestigious honors available to early career faculty and supports those who serve as academic role models in research and education, leading advances in the mission of their department or organization.

▶️ Amy Webster (top left) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Biological Science, who studies how genetically identical individuals raised in the same environment, like twins, can still be different, informing our understanding of disease risk.

▶️ Douglas Storace (top right) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Biological Science and FSU Program in Neuroscience, who researches how the olfactory system, or sense of smell, influences decision making and our perception of the world around us.

▶️ Kai Zhao (middle right) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Computer Science, who designs high-performance computing systems that help researchers manage large amounts of data in experiments and theoretical predictions.

▶️ Michael Gubanov (bottom right) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Computer Science and FSU Data Science Program, who is developing a new type of AI to more accurately calculate and interpret numeric data, with applications in healthcare and cancer treatment.

▶️ Xiaonan Zhang (bottom left) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Computer Science, who designs frameworks that allow wireless devices to collaborate and execute complex AI applications, facilitating real-time decisions in fields like healthcare, transportation and emergency response.

▶️ Cyprian Lewandowski (middle left) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Physics, who analyzes quantum materials with the potential to enable transformative technologies, such as new quantum computing platforms or more advanced sensors.

Assistant Professor in the FSU Department of Computer Science Xiaonan Zhang (slide one) and her research team have won the Best Paper Runner-Up Award at the IEEE / ACM - Association for Computing Machinery 2026 Conference on Connected Health: Applications, Systems and Engineering Technologies!

Led by Zhang's doctoral student Hansong Zhou (slide two), the paper explores AI's ability to act as a "coach," encouraging users to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“Health behavioral change is inherently a long-term process, and sustained improvements in physical activity, diet, and sleep require continued support over time," Zhou said. "Our work examines how AI-based health coaching can maintain continuity across multiple sessions by tracking an individual's goals, progress, and barriers, while proactively guiding subsequent conversations."

Florida’s first formal graduate-level credential in quantum information science and engineering is officially at Florida State University!

The Graduate Certificate in Quantum Science & Technology will provide graduate students and working professionals with rigorous training across quantum physics, materials science, chemistry, computer science and engineering.

The certificate is now accepting applications for Spring 2027 enrollment.

Administered by the FSU Quantum Initiative, the certificate draws on courses from multiple departments and two colleges — the FSU College of Arts & Sciences and FAMU FSU College of Engineering.

Want to learn more about AI's applications in chemistry?

Starting Aug. 6, the FSU Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry's AI Bootcamp will take place over six sessions, beginning with an introduction to large language models and concluding with a discussion on the benefits, risks, and future of AI in education.

Hosted by Assistant Professor Wen Zhu and Cottrell Family Professor Oliver Steinbock, both from the Florida State University Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, the AI Bootcamp will feature talks by faculty and staff from across FSU — Florida State University Libraries, FSU - Department of Scientific Computing, FSU Department of Computer Science, The Florida State School of Information and more!

There will also be guest lectures from folks affiliated with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Carnegie Mellon College of Engineering, University of Florida, Emory University, and Synfini.

It is not required to attend all six sessions.

Each session will be held in the Chemical Sciences Laboratory (Room 1005), except the Aug. 7 session, which will be held in Room 1003.
