With support from a new Office of Naval Research grant, Professor Shahriar Negahdaripour and doctoral student Guilherme Oliveira are using machine learning to better understand how sonar turns sound waves into images and how those images can reveal more about underwater environments. Their goal is to transform 2D sonar images into more accurate 3D models that could improve marine research, search-and-rescue missions, and offshore infrastructure inspections.
