Sarabande Books recently announced the winners of their 2026 awards, including Liesel Hamilton for the Prize in the Essay. Sarabande will publish her winning collection of essays, dovetailing, in early 2028. Hamilton began work on the book as her dissertation at FSU. She is currently an assistant instructional professor in the University of Florida’s Writing Program.

In her citation, Sarabande judge Aimee Nezhukumatathil wrote, “This beautiful essay collection honors the fragile but sustaining ties between family and landscape. In these pages, birds serve as boon companions, guides, and witnesses. By the final page, you'll find yourself looking more carefully at birds—and most importantly—at the people you love.”

Kudos to Megharaj Adhikari and the other graduate student fellows at the FSU Humanities Center. Megha is a doctoral candidate working with Dr. Aaron Jaffe in the FSU Department of English. His dissertation, “Peak Modernism,” argues that modernism’s most radical formal experiments emerged from the encounter with altitude, geology, and deep time, reading the mountain not as a backdrop for human meaning but as an elemental medium in its own right. The project draws together modernist literature, expedition archives, media theory, ecocriticism, postcolonial thought, and Upanishadic cosmology.
