Professor and University Alumni Distinguished Writer Diane Roberts has an essay published in the Summer/Fall 2026 issue of Oxford American titled “Memory Architecture: Devotion to a Florida home.” Roberts is the author of four books, including Dream State, a historical memoir of her Florida family and Tribal: College Football and the Secret Heart of America. Her work has also appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Times of London, The Guardian, and The Washington Post.

This Wednesday, the Florida State University English Department's Aaron Jaffe will deliver "Moby-Dick and the Endless Afterlives of the White Whale" as part of the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System's “Library Lunch Break” lecture series! 🐋

Jaffe's talk will explore how the literary classic "Moby-Dick" by Herman Melville has continued to capture our attention, including its 1956 Hollywood film adaption.

Fun fact: "Moby-Dick" was originally published in 1851 — the same year Florida State University was founded.

The “Library Lunch Break” lecture series, which is is free and open to the public, highlights different topics in U.S. history in celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Kelsie Fernandez is a senior double majoring in English literature and humanities. As a participant in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP), she explored the written power dynamics of 18th-century womanhood under a patriarchal system. She continued exploring this topic through an IDEA Grant, which supported her ongoing work contributing to a literature podcast and an Honors in the Major thesis on Victorian literature.
