We are excited to announce that Z News is one of eight college media organizations to be awarded a grant from the Solutions Journalism Network for 2026-27 as part of the SJN Student Media Challenge. Students will receive specialized training in solutions journalism during the project. Z News will expand its student newscast’s coverage of how health inequities and food insecurity create mental health challenges, and explore responses on and beyond campus, with an emphasis on the underserved youth populations in the Tampa Bay Region. Congratulations to Dr. Stephanie Elder and her students.

10 students from the Zimmerman School are involved in this statewide voter guide effort, doing primary research and assembling answers from the candidates throughout the Tampa Bay region. They are working with the assistance of Prof. Wayne Garcia and WUSF's Amy Tardif and other editors and reporters at the NPR affiliate. The voter guide is scheduled to go public by the end of July.

In addition, two of those news interns are working on another voter information effort. "For the August primary, the Florida Election Reporting Partnership will focus on school board elections. This starting point reflects a serious need in the news landscape, the billions in public funding that school boards steward each year, and the reality of Florida’s recent ranking as having the nation’s lowest reading scores among its more than 2.8 million students, according to an Education Scorecard report," according to a story in the Florida Tribune.

The Medill Solutions Journalism Hub, in partnership with the Solutions Journalism Network, is proud to announce the Medill Solutions Journalism Educators Academy. This intensive, two-day residency is designed for university journalism and communications faculty ready to integrate rigorous solutions-based reporting into their classrooms. Held at Medill’s Chicago campus, the Academy provides educators with a deep dive into reporting on democracy, the Asset-Framing® methodology, and the Complicating the Narrative framework through the lens of youth mental health."
