Congratulations to our Elizabeth Hines whose first book "War in the Time of Anglo-Dutch Empire, 1595-1652" won the Oxford University Press First Book Prize 2026! The book presents to us a retelling of Western Europe’s imperial past, one that was driven by profits and religious cause rather than, as popularly understood, national aspirations. Onward and forward, Elizabeth!

With funds from a Jo Ann and Louis Cimino Research Award (one of our internal departmental awards), PhD candidate Sean Carlson was recently able to conduct research at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library in Kansas. One of his many finds was this chart that lays out U.S. overseas basing in Europe during the Cold War--part of a series which has yet to be digitized. This is why research travel funds are so important to the success of our graduate students.

How did financial entanglements alter diplomatic alignments in seventeenth-century Europe?
In her latest article in the Journal of Early Modern History (Vol. 30, Issue 4), our Elizabeth Hines examines “Dutch Gold and Charles I’s Turn from Spain, 1634–1637", exploring the intersection of Anglo-Dutch finance, Stuart statecraft, and shifting alliances during a critical phase of the Thirty Years' War, shedding new light on how economic interests redirected Charles I's foreign policy away from Madrid.
Read the article here:

Abstract This article investigates Dutch elements of English state financing under the early Stuart kings. It reveals Anglo-Dutch financial connections that contributed not only to the growth of the English state, but also to the political and charitable development of the Thirty Years’ War in Eur...

Our PhD candidate Sofia Almeida presented a paper at the International Federation for Public History Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. Her paper dealt with her research on the Washington family cemetery in Westmoreland County, Virginia and how its early 20th century commemoration actively ignored the graves of enslaved people. The conference’s theme was “Difficult Histories” and Sofia was part of a panel that included papers looking at Portuguese memory of the 1974 Carnation Revolution and WWII era ex*****on sites in Croatia. The IFPH is very selective so Sofia’s participation is quite an honor!

Congratulations to our very own Davide Tanasi, on receiving the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Community Champion Award from Sheriff Chad Chronister!

Dr. Tanasi was honored for leading a landmark, multi-year research project dedicated to preserving and digitally curating the Sheriff's Office vast historical archives. Beyond the technical achievement, this collaboration underscores the vital role historians play in the wider community, rescuing fragile local records, bridging advanced digital humanities with public history, and ensuring Tampa Bay’s shared heritage remains protected and accessible for future generations of students, scholars, and citizens.
