Homecoming looks good on the water. 🤘

Dean Elizabeth Spiller joined President Moez Limayem, Interim Regional Chancellor Thomas Smith, and fellow Bulls at USF St. Petersburg for the return of Rocky’s Regatta.

The tradition, first launched 27 years ago with cardboard boats, made its comeback with kayak races. President Limayem kicked off both the student and faculty/staff heats as students, colleagues, alumni, and trustees cheered from Bayboro Harbor.

Huge thanks to the students and staff who brought this tradition back and gave our community a reason to celebrate on the waterfront. 🌊 ☀️

USF biologist Ryan Carney has earned a new patent for an AI‑powered smart mosquito trap — technology designed to automatically identify Aedes aegypti, the mosquito responsible for spreading dengue and Zika.

The timing is critical: Tampa is currently experiencing the largest dengue outbreak in the continental U.S. in nearly a century, with 183 locally acquired cases and the first reported death.

Carney’s research directly targets this threat, from AI mosquito identification to Tampa Bay habitat modeling and dengue‑outbreak modeling now being prepared for publication. This patent marks a major step forward for public‑health innovation at USF.
