The University of Tampa has a long history of quality teacher education programs. UT undergraduate students complete a State-approved licensure program in 4 years. Students engage in multiple field experiences in addition to 3 practicums/internships in diverse K-12 schools. UT also offers 3 graduate programs: M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction, M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, and M.S. in Instructional Design & Technology. The Department of Education was honored to welcome Dr. Teresa Abi-Nader Dahlberg, President of The University of Tampa, to Dr. Heather Schock’s EDU 302 class on September 14 as part of the Impactful Educator Speaker Series.

Created by Dr. Schock, the series gives future educators the opportunity to engage with leaders whose experiences demonstrate the many different ways educators can make an impact.

Dr. Dahlberg shared her personal and professional journey with students, speaking candidly about leadership, taking risks, embracing opportunities, and having the confidence to find and use your voice.

Perhaps the best reflection of her impact came from the students themselves. Following her visit, students shared that they were inspired by:

• Dr. Dahlberg’s message to “not apologize for taking up space” and to have confidence in their own voices.
• Her encouragement to say yes, take chances, and remain open to opportunities, even when they lead somewhere unexpected.
• Hearing that obstacles are part of the journey, rather than a reason to stop pursuing a goal.
• Her willingness to embrace change, speak her mind, and take every opportunity she can.
• Seeing a leader who students described as strong and accomplished, while also approachable, authentic, enthusiastic, and passionate.
• Learning about her historic role as the first woman to serve as president of The University of Tampa.

One student left the conversation feeling empowered to “do anything,” while others reflected on the importance of relationships, connections, confidence, and being willing to take chances throughout their careers.

These are the moments at the heart of the Impactful Educator Speaker Series. Future educators have the opportunity to learn about leadership while sitting across from someone who has lived it, ask questions, and imagine what might be possible in their own lives and careers.

Thank you, Dr. Dahlberg, for spending time with our future educators and for sharing your experiences, wisdom, and encouragement so openly.

We’re excited to celebrate Suzanne Ensmann and Minkyoung Kim, faculty in the University of Tampa’s Instructional Design and Technology program, who have been awarded a $15,000 RISE grant for their project, Impacting Learning with Immersive Experiences.

Through this initiative, Drs. Ensmann and Kim will integrate extended reality and immersive learning technologies into the IDT program, including Meta Quest headsets, Adobe Captivate, and Engage XR. Their work will bring together research in social and gameful experiential learning, wearable technologies, and immersive environments to examine how these tools can support knowledge retention, skill development, and meaningful learning experiences.

Congratulations to Dr. Ensmann and Dr. Kim on this exciting investment in innovation, research, and the future of instructional design and technology at UTampa!
