Geology faculty conducted three two-week field sessions this past summer at the first-ever permanent field station for its Geology Summer Field School. Prior to breaking ground on this new site in August 2023, field school sessions were held at rented locations, posting a challenge due to rising costs and limited research time.

The new permanent field station facility, located in Mackay, Idaho, offers a consistent and enriching learning experience for students, and also includes six restrooms, a functional kitchen, and two sheds for faculty and equipment.

A team of researchers led by USF St. Petersburg GIS and Remote Sensing Professor Barnali Dixon used the CRIS-HAZARD app to analyze real-time flooding in Pinellas County, which is home to 588 miles of coastline in Florida. The app also received data from users in neighboring Hillsborough County during Hurricane Milton, which allowed the team to expand its research.

A team of researchers led by USF St. Petersburg GIS and Remote Sensing Professor Barnali Dixon used the CRIS-HAZARD app to analyze real-time flooding in Pinellas County. The web-based application gathers crowdsourced data to identify flooding and inform policy in vulnerable coastal communities.

A new book from Chris Meindl, director of the USF Florida Studies Program and a professor of Geography, chronicles the unique geology, centuries of history and the current state of springs in the sunshine state. Read about Meindl to learn more about the science behind these wonders of Florida’s environment, if Ponce de Leon ever saw a spring, much less the Fountain of Youth, and how we can balance our love of springs with protecting them.

Florida is home to one of the largest concentrations of freshwater springs on the planet. These natural wonders have inspired art, health treatments, roadside attractions and emotional debates over how best to utilize and protect them. Exciting research funded by NASA and the Army Corps of Engineers is underway to study permafrost thaw in Alaska and its environmental impacts. Led by Dr. Timothy Dixon from the School of Geosciences, the team includes USF grad students Robert Van Alphen and Taha Sadeghi Chorsi, post-doc Jason Shabaga, and advisor Merritt Turetsky from the University of Colorado, Boulder. This project aims to understand landforms created by thawing permafrost, its effect on methane emissions, and whether the rate of thaw is accelerating. 🌍🔍
