The best career advice often comes from those who have recently walked the path. Christopher Pico ’24, a Digital & Social Content Designer for the NBA, recently returned to campus to speak with students in COM 383. Christopher shared insights from his post-graduation journey, offered advice for aspiring advertising and public relations professionals, and gave students a firsthand look at what it takes to build a career in the sports and media industry.

One of the greatest strengths of the Spartan network is alumni who give back by sharing their experiences, opening doors, and helping guide the next generation of professionals. Thank you, Christopher, for returning to UTampa and inspiring current Spartans as they take their next steps toward their own careers.

Congratulations to John Davis Jr. M.F.A. ’14 on receiving the Silver Medal for Older Children’s Literature at the Florida Book Awards for his novel, "Vidge Floyd and the Secret Frequencies." 🎉📚

Set in 1990s small-town Florida, the story follows neurodivergent teen Harrison “Vidge” Floyd as his curiosity and love for police scanners and CB radios lead him into unexpected mysteries. Inspired by John’s years teaching students with learning differences, the novel first began during the COVID lockdown when his two sons, then the perfect age for middle-grades novels, encouraged him to write them a story of their own. The result is a heartfelt tribute to curiosity, individuality, and the power of being yourself.

From the University of Tampa MFA program to award-winning author, John credits the mentorship and inspiration he found along the way as part of his creative journey.

We are so proud to celebrate John’s continued success as an author, educator, and Spartan alum. ❤️

This month’s Alumni Owned Business Spotlight, Spartans Supporting Spartans, features Delices de France, a beloved French bakery founded by UTampa alumnus Patrick Baboun ’86.

Patrick’s journey into baking began unexpectedly during a vacation in Montreal, when a simple baguette sparked a lifelong passion for artisan bread. What started as curiosity quickly turned into years of apprenticeship and training under French master bakers, eventually leading him to open Delices de France in Miami in 1994.

Today, loyal customers return for the bakery’s fresh baked breads, buttery croissants, pastries, quiches, sandwiches and signature desserts, all crafted with the same care and tradition that inspired Patrick decades ago. From the smell of warm bread filling the bakery to the welcoming atmosphere inside, Delices de France has become a cherished staple in the Miami community.

If you are in the area, stop by and support a fellow Spartan.
