USF Child & Family Studies Child & Family Studies (CFS) is a department within the College of Behavioral & Community Sciences (CBCS) at the University of South Florida.

The Department of Child & Family Studies (CFS) is one of six departments and schools within the College of Behavioral & Community Sciences (CBCS) at the University of South Florida (USF). Since 1984, CFS has worked to support the development of new knowledge and practices through research and evaluation, theory, policy, and practice innovation. CFS efforts are consistent with the CBCS mission of combining knowledge gained through the behavioral sciences with knowledge gained from the community. CFS faculty, staff and students, who are well immersed in the local community as well as state and national efforts, are deeply connected to the college's focus of Creating Healthy Communities. All activities within CFS are also aligned with USF strategic goals: having well-educated and highly skilled global citizens through a continuing commitment to student success; participating in high-impact research and innovation to change lives, improve health, and foster sustainable development and positive societal change; creating new partnerships to build a strong and sustainable future for Florida in the global economy; and establishing a strong and sustainable economic base in support of USF's continued academic advancement.

Matthew Foster, a co-principal investigator and associate professor in CFS, brings expertise in assessment development and intervention evaluation to the project.

A new $4.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education will help us better prepare educators to support young English learners.

Over the next five years, the interdisciplinary effort will bring together our College, the USF College of Behavioral & Community Sciences, Hillsborough County Public Schools and other community partners to strengthen language and literacy instruction for children from pre-K through third grade.

The initiative will equip current and future educators with practical tools to better meet the needs of multilingual children in their classrooms.

Project iSEBA brings ESE and Applied Behavior Analysis students together through coursework and field-based experiences, providing opportunities to learn across both disciplines.

Future special education teachers at can receive significant support while earning their degree. ๐Ÿค˜

Through Project iSEBA, eligible students in USFโ€™s Master of Arts in Teaching in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) program can receive up to $27,000 in funding. The project brings ESE and Applied Behavior Analysis students together through coursework and field-based experiences, providing opportunities to learn across both disciplines.

ESE students will also earn Reading and ESOL endorsements, further preparing them to support students in schools and classrooms.

The 2026 Serovich Scholars are turning their education into action, expanding access to essential services, supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, addressing loneliness among older adults, advancing mental health and creating stronger communities.

The Serovich Scholars Program was established through a generous gift from Bob Clark in honor of his longtime friend and CBCS Dean Julie Serovich.
