ASU students in Los Angeles recently came together across programs for a night built around one thing: connection. 💛

Student and faculty conversations, collaborative creative challenges, new faces and plenty of laughs gave students a chance to step outside their usual circles and build community across disciplines. 🎨🎬🧵

Because some of the best ideas start when different creatives get in the same room.

🎬 Who gets to tell the stories that shape pop culture and what happens when a new generation takes the lead?

Peter Murrieta, Emmy-winning writer and producer and deputy director of The ASU Sidney Poitier New American Film School, joined KJZZ to talk about 70 years of Latino representation in film and television, the changing entertainment industry and his new book, Two Vatos Talk Pop Cultura.

And when the conversation turned to the future, Murrieta pointed to his students.

“I am building a wave...I’m educating hundreds and hundreds of people every semester, and it’s going to become a wave that you can’t turn back.” 🌊

That’s a glimpse into the thinking of Institute Professor Daniel Bernard Roumain — one of four creative leaders teaching Designing Leadership: Practices for a Resilient World this fall.

Every Tuesday features a rotating open lecture series from Roumain, Liz Lerman, Bruce Mau or Herberger Institute Dean Renée Chen, each bringing their own experiences, practices and perspectives on creativity and leadership.

For Roumain, that can mean creating a plan with enough space for trust, choice — and “a little bit of dreaming too.” 🎻💭

🏆 From Los Angeles to Venice — and now, a Special Jury Prize at the Venice Biennale!✨

"Out of the Ashes," from ASU’s Narrative and Emerging Media program, has been awarded the Special Jury Prize in the Venice Immersive competition! 🎥

Directed by Rory Mitchell and Nonny de la Peña, the VR documentary reflects on the 2025 Los Angeles fires and the city’s recovery through 3D scans of destroyed homes, 360 video and the stories of those who lived through them.

On one of immersive storytelling’s biggest stages, those stories and the people who shared them, were at the heart of the moment. 💛

“First and foremost, we would like to thank our friends and neighbors who have shared their stories with us through such unimaginable loss and pain.”

A huge congratulations to the entire "Out of the Ashes" team on this incredible recognition. 🦁✨

From Los Angeles to Venice. ✈️

ASU’s Narrative and Emerging Media program is at the 2026 Venice Biennale, where “Out of the Ashes” was selected as one of just 30 projects in the immersive competition. 🎥✨

The VR documentary reflects on the 2025 Los Angeles fires and the city’s recovery, using 3D scans of destroyed homes, 360 video and interviews to preserve and share the stories behind the devastation.

Students, alumni and faculty have all made the journey to Venice — and we’re taking you along with them. 🌎

🌐 What happens when you design a world that can think, react and change?

This fall, The Design School at ASU launches Designing Digital Worlds (DSC 553/494), a new interdisciplinary course giving students hands-on experience with NVIDIA Omniverse Libraries and OpenUSD at the MIX Center.

Led by Associate Professor Ana Herruzo, students will explore how connected 3D worlds are changing the way we create across:

🏙️ Architecture and digital twins
🎮 Games and real-time world building
🎬 Film and virtual production
🥽 XR and immersive experiences
⚙️ Industrial design and simulation
🤖 Physical AI and robotics

And they’ll be learning with direct access to NVIDIA experts through guest lectures, office hours, design reviews and specialized resources throughout the semester.

This course is part of the new MS in Immersive Experience Design, launched by The Design School and based at the ASU Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center.
