What do Barcelona, a Moroccan market and a coral reef have in common?

For a group of Barrett students, they all became classrooms.

Ten Barrett students are among ASU’s 23 most recent Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship recipients. Their experiences took them from Spain, Morocco and Portugal to Mexico’s Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, where they studied, conducted research and gained new perspectives on the world—and themselves.

They returned with greater confidence, adaptability, intercultural understanding and memories that will stay with them long after graduation.

Barrett, The Honors College remembers ASU President Emeritus Lattie F. Coor Jr.

Barrett, The Honors College joins the ASU community in mourning the passing of President Emeritus Lattie F. Coor Jr., whose leadership helped shape an important chapter in Barrett’s history.

“ASU would not be the institution it is today without Lattie Coor’s vision, leadership and commitment to the community,” ASU President Michael M. Crow said.

During his tenure as ASU’s 15th president, Coor oversaw the 2001 naming of the honors college in recognition of Craig and Barbara Barrett’s commitment to ASU and honors education.

His connection to Barrett is also reflected in the Lattie F. and Elnora W. Coor Scholarship, created in honor of their lifelong commitment to education. The renewable scholarship supports first generation Arizona students entering Barrett and helps recipients pursue their goals and dreams.

We are grateful for President Coor’s vision, leadership and enduring commitment to ASU, Barrett and generations of students.

From Barrett, The Honors College to the NFL Draft 🏈🔱

After balancing the academic rigor of Barrett, The Honors College with Division I football at Arizona State University, Keith Abney II became the first Barrett student to be drafted into the NFL, selected by the Detroit Lions.

Today, he presented Dean Tara Williams with his ASU football jersey, marking a proud moment for the Barrett community.

Keith's accomplishment is a reminder that students do not have to choose between pursuing their athletic and academic goals. Barrett student-athletes compete across 12 ASU sports teams while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.62, demonstrating that an honors education and Division I athletics can successfully coexist at the highest level.

“We’re so proud of Keith and this special milestone, and we can’t wait to see him carry the Barrett flag into everything he does in the NFL.” — Dean Tara Williams

Congratulations, Keith, on this remarkable accomplishment and for making Barrett history while inspiring future scholar-athletes to pursue their ambitions without limits.

Barrett, The Honors College brings together students from every major across Arizona State University, reflecting a wide range of disciplines, interests, and ambitions. Students come to ASU to discover their passions, pursue meaningful work, and make a difference while still in school.

Recent graduate Tyler Regan exemplifies that experience.

Tyler participated in Barrett’s award-winning GlobalResolve program, where students collaborate internationally to develop solutions to real-world challenges. He paired that work with his passion for filmmaking, combining global problem-solving with storytelling and creative media.

Watch Tyler’s story, recently featured on FOX 10 Phoenix, to see the real-world influence of his work and experiences. While the full segment is worth watching, Tyler’s story begins around the 16-minute mark.

Tyler also contributed to student-produced documentary projects through Documentary for Social Impact, a course that partners with Arizona nonprofits to create films supporting underserved communities and local outreach efforts. Through these projects, students amplified nonprofit voices, addressed community needs, and applied their skills beyond the classroom.

Together, these experiences highlight how Barrett students turn their education into meaningful action by blending academics, creativity, and purpose to create real impact.

This week, we take you behind the scenes in Sun Devil Athletics. First, we hit the diamond with ASU Baseball's Landon Hairston to discuss his journey. Then, we shift gears to the hardwood for a sit-down with Women's Basketball Head Coach Molly Miller.
