As a current student in ASU’s Master of Counseling program, I’m looking forward to continuing to grow as a future counselor, connecting with other fellows and professionals in the field, and furthering my passion for culturally responsive care. What happens when a service animal’s working life comes to an end?

Join Interim Dean Manuel Avilés-Santiago for the next Catalyst Conversations, featuring communication scholar, ethics professor and disability advocate Melba Vélez Ortiz.

In “I Had Some Help: The Messy, Emotional Ethics of Retiring a Service Animal,” Vélez Ortiz draws on her expertise as an ethicist and her experience with her guide dog, Chad, to explore the grief, gratitude and responsibility that accompany a service animal’s retirement. Her talk considers what the transition from working partnership to retirement can teach us about dignity, dependence and care.

Congratulations to our Spring 2026 graduates. It was a great celebration at the SCCP Caps and Gowns Celebration on May 12, 2026.

The SCCP Caps and Gowns Celebration provides an opportunity for graduates, families, friends, supervisors, academic support, and faculty to come together and celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates completing their degree. We were honored to have celebrated your dedication, hard work, your growth, and everything else it took to make it to this point.
