Alumni Spotlight: Jonathan Moye

Jonathan Moye, a graduate of the Footwear Design and Merchandising program at ASU FIDM, has officially launched his independent footwear brand, Extraño, with the debut release of Phase 01.

Originally developed during his time as a student, the design was recognized at the 2021 FIDM graduation for achievement in footwear design. Since then, Jonathan has taken the concept through multiple stages of refinement, prototyping, and manufacturing to bring it to life.

Phase 01 blends technical construction with conceptual storytelling. Inspired by natural landscapes and abstract forms, the shoe features a full suede upper, layered overlays, and reinforced stitching that creates both durability and a distinct visual identity.

This launch represents more than a product. It reflects the journey from design education to independent brand creation.

🎓 Herberger Institute alumni are doing amazing things and have stories to tell – check out Crestcencia Ortiz-Barnett!

Crestcencia graduated in May 2024 with a Master’s in Theatre Directing. Her journey is just one of many inspiring paths shaped at ASU.

Now an Assistant Professor of Theatre and Theatre Historian at North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT), Ortiz-Barnett recently launched a successful pilot Theatre Exchange Program in partnership with NCAT and ASU. The initiative supports Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) theatre undergraduates who are exploring MFA pathways.

Because no HBCUs currently offer MFA programs in theatre, the exchange connects students of color with graduate programs that have strong support systems in place to guide them through to graduation. This fall, she’ll be teaching with Semester at Sea, visiting over 10 countries, and hopes to grow the exchange into an international theatre program. Crestcencia welcomes conversations with anyone interested in learning more.
