"In his lifetime, Voltaire was portrayed by some of the finest artists of the period, among them Nicolas de Largillière (1656–1746) (VI7), Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne (1704–1778) (VI17), and Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714–1785) (VI24). Their works displayed great technical mastery – Pigalle’s Voltaire nu even daring innovation – yet none became influential prototypes. In this respect, Largillière, Lemoyne, and Pigalle were eclipsed by the Genevan autodidact Jean Huber (1721–1786), Voltaire’s most prolific and, in the long run, most influential portraitist. Though a minor artist by conventional standards, Huber had a far sharper instinct for what makes an image iconic." --
