We had so much fun learning about what our students in the School of Life Sciences Undergraduate Research Program (SOLUR) have been working on in our labs! 🔎🔬

At today’s SOLUR Symposium, we saw dozens of posters exploring topics like potential different uses for medications, why pupillary diameter is a window into the brain of those with ADHD, the leading causes of vaccine hesitancy, uncovering genetic markers for mental health, the rise of mosquito-borne illnesses, and how using plant DNA in studies might lead to the discovery of gene therapies, it’s no surprise that our student researchers are at the forefront of cutting-edge innovation.🧬🌱🦟🥼

🐝✨ Sun Devil Giving Day is TODAY, and you can help us bring even more science to life on campus!

With donor support, we aim to build a wood-and-glass demonstration beehive in the LSA courtyard, providing students and visitors with a rare, up-close look at honeybees in their natural, undisturbed environment. You might even catch a close glimpse of the queen bee as she lays eggs inside the hive. 👑🍯

Support the Demonstration Beehive Fund and help create a living laboratory for pollinator education, research and hands-on student discovery. 🌻

What’s happening in our labs? 🔬✨

From exploring how psilocybin shapes the gut microbiome and healthy aging to reimagining how Gen Z learns in STEM classrooms, our students are asking bold questions — and finding meaningful answers.

On March 19, your support fuels hands-on research, student training and discoveries that shape the future of science and education.

Join us for Sun Devil Giving Day and invest in the next generation of scientists. 🧬🧡

Bees are surprisingly sophisticated. 🐝

A new Virginia Tech led study, in collaboration with ASU School of Life Sciences, has for the first time identified brain chemical patterns that predict how quickly individual honey bees learn new associations and offer new insight into the biology of learning and decision-making in people.

We’re thrilled to share that one of our SOLS honeybees is featured on the February 2026 print cover of Insect Molecular Biology (Wiley) 🐝✨

Even more exciting: this cover was selected for the entire 2026 IMB publishing series, so the same bee will reappear in the April, June, August, October, and December issues. 📖

The bee image was captured by Associate Director Christofer Bang, with Dr. Cahit Ozturk assisting in preparing the bees. The final illustration, featuring the protein structure of Vitellogenin, a central focus of Gro Amdam's lab research, was assembled by postdoc Vilde Leipart.

Bang adds: “I’ve taken countless photos of honeybees… Unlike most of my bee shots, this one wasn’t taken in a natural setting—I caught her trying to extract sugar from a Coke bottle! Dr. Leipart then beautifully edited the image to place the bee onto the protein structure.”

The Royal Entomological Society has highlighted this cover as a standout among their 2026 journal lineup.
