From working on fi****ms at just 7 years old to launching a veteran-owned gunsmithing business, SDI Graduate Ivan Melendez turned a lifelong passion into a profession.

While serving active duty in the U.S. Army as a Small Arms/Artillery Repairman (91F), Ivan earned his Associate of Science in Fi****ms Technology degree from SDI, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2023.

Today, Ivan and his father operate Alien Arms LLC in Levelland, Texas, providing custom gunsmithing, firearm repairs, preventative maintenance, and vintage firearm restoration services.

Congratulations to Ivan on building a successful career in the fi****ms industry and continuing to serve the fi****ms community through craftsmanship and dedication.

Meet Graduate Alex Christenson.

Growing up in a gun-free household, he didn’t hold his first firearm until he was 18 years old after a friend invited him shooting.

That experience quickly turned into a passion.

After purchasing his first firearm, a Re*****on 870 Super-Mag, he became fascinated with how fi****ms worked, even completely disassembling the shotgun during his first cleaning. What started as curiosity eventually became a career path.

With a background in welding, engineering technology, manufacturing, and electrical work, he already had a strong technical foundation. But after purchasing and customizing his first AR-15 in 2020, he knew he wanted to pursue gunsmithing full time.

In February 2021, he enrolled in the Sonoran Desert Institute Associate of Science in Fi****ms Technology program, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a 3.98 GPA.

Recognizing a growing need for gunsmithing services in Iowa, he officially launched Tapos Gunsmithing, LLC in November 2022 while still working full time. After balancing both careers for nearly two years, he took the leap in March 2024 to focus entirely on growing the business.
