French now has 396 million speakers worldwide according to a 2026 report. That puts it in fourth place globally, ahead of Arabic and behind Mandarin, English, and Spanish. Most people still underestimate just how far the language actually reaches.

The jump from 321 million in 2022 is not just about growth. For the first time, the data includes children aged 6 to 9 studying in French in countries where it is used in schools. That shift alone changes how we see the real footprint of the language.

A lot of this momentum is coming from Africa, where French is part of daily life in business, education, and government. In many cities, it is not treated as a second language at all. It is simply the language people use to get things done.

If you are used to hearing French only in Paris or a few parts of Europe, this puts things into perspective. The language is expanding in places most travelers do not think about, and that is where its future is being shaped.

Rancho Solano Preparatory School est à la recherche d’une personne disponible et d’accord pour remplacer une enseignante pendant son absence cet été du 10 août au 4 septembre 2026.

Voici le message de Claudia Descloux: "je travaille à Rancho Solano Preparatory School , où j’enseigne le français au niveau de la High School. Je m’occupe de tous les cours, du niveau débutant au niveau proficient, y compris les classes IB (niveau Ab initio = A2 et niveau Language B = B2/C1). Il est clair que je vais préparer tous les cours à l’avance, afin que la personne qui me remplacera puisse les suivre sans souci. Il s’agit d’un poste à 100%. Je travaille tous les jours de 7h45 à 14h30 avec une heure d’office hour à la fin de la journée."
