Andrew Ahearne’s journey took an unexpected turn — from studying to become a French teacher to teaching English abroad. Through SILC, he discovered a new path that led him to Luxembourg as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant and now to Osaka, Japan.

Drawing on what he learned in SLC 202, he encourages others to approach new experiences with humility, curiosity and respect. 🙌

Every year, students in ASU's Russian program write their national contest essays together in a single class session. This year, 28 of them won awards 🏆 — placing ASU 7th out of 49 institutions and 838 students, ahead of NYU, West Point, Vanderbilt and the Defense Language Institute. This is the program's best performance in its history.

Beyond the contest, three students earned Boren Scholarships, one received a Fulbright and two presented research at NYU's Jordan Center for the third consecutive year. Since 2005, students in this program have earned 127 prestigious awards.

Today, we remember, not just as an institution but as a community of people who understand what it means to serve something greater than yourself.

To all who gave everything — thank you. 🇺🇸

When you’re apart from someone, nostalgic lingers and when you see them again, happiness fills your heart. In French it’s called retrouvailles (reh-troo-VAY).

Stay tuned for more words with no English equivalent. 🌎

David graduated from SILC with a Spanish BA in 2001 thinking his degree would take him to Latin America.
Instead, it took him all over the world — from hiking the Great Wall of China to negotiating contracts over Arabic coffee in the Middle East.

Today he leads a technology company in China as General Manager and Senior Vice President of Business Operations at Sea Point Inc.

See how SILC shaped his journey. ➡️

Graduation is not always the end of the story at SILC.
Judith Guerrero, fall 2025 graduate and Dean's Medalist in Italian Studies, is heading to Ravenna, Italy this summer for a two-month internship at the Biblioteca Classense.

Housed inside a 16th-century Camaldolese monastery, the library is one of Italy's twenty greatest library institutions and holds one of the world's only surviving manuscripts of Aristophanes. Judith will work there in full Italian immersion, contributing to manuscript conservation and the library's digital presence.

The internship is unpaid. Her SILC Italian faculty — including Professor Enrico Minardi, a Ravenna native himself — came together and funded a month of her housing so she could go independently and give everything to the experience.

This opportunity exists through a formal three-year partnership between ASU's School of International Letters and Cultures and the Municipality of Ravenna. Judith is only the second student to go through it. Last year's student returned home and secured a position at a museum. The program is building something real.

A language degree is not just what you study. It is the doors your faculty help you walk through — even after you graduate. Congratulations, Judith. Ravenna is waiting.🏛️
