OPUS II - Meet The Composers:

In anticipation of the upcoming concert May 11th, 1pm at the Phoenix Art Museum, meet today's featured composer...

Our ASU SCI President Collette Sipho Mabingani!

Dr. Mabingani is largely responsible for creating ASU SCI and this concert will be his last with the group. He will perform his piece "Siyaya Phambili" (Moving Forward) for solo percussion.

Born and raised in South Africa during the apartheid era, C. Sipho Mabingani began his musical journey in Johannesburg as a performer of traditional African music. As he learned the art from an early age, he developed an interest in musical styles of the world, a fascination which afforded him the opportunity to exile to America.

In music and throughout his travels in the West and Europe, Mabingani has shared the rich traditions of the vast South African cultural landscape through performances, lectures, workshops and presentations. This led to a world-music voice in his compositions, and acts as a vehicle through which marrying different cultural musics promote unity through enriching cultural exchanges.

Mabingani holds the following music composition degrees; bachelor, Grand Valley State University (GVSU); master, Central Michigan University (CMU); and doctor, Arizona State University (ASU). His former teachers include Bill Ryan (GVSU), David R. Gillingham and Scott Harding (CMU), James DeMars, Roshanne Etezady, Jody Rockmaker and Rodney Rogers (ASU).
