Presentation Day!

Every Friday, every student and faculty member participating in SURE come together to hear about the different projects that are being researched this summer. Each student gives three presentations throughout the summer, each giving progress updates, future plans, and any other information they would like to share about their work. This provides a good learning opportunity, as there is such a diverse set of research groups and projects presented!

Great day in the lab! 🧪

Today I prepped a solvent for the glovebox using a technique called freeze-pump-thaw:

1. Freeze with liquid nitrogen
2. Pull a vacuum to remove oxygen and moisture
3. Thaw and repeat

Everything that goes into the glovebox has to be completely free of air because the glovebox contains an atmosphere of argon gas. Many of the reactions I run are air-sensitive, so I spend plenty of time in the glovebox!

Meet my lab! 🧪

For the past two years I’ve been working in Dr. Van Hoveln’s organic chemistry lab, studying a strange coupling reaction where two nitrogen atoms sneak in and turn our coupled product into something called an azobenzene. This is unexpected, so my job is to figure out why this happens through a mechanistic analysis of the reaction.

Every year we present our work at the SURE symposium and ACS conferences, where scientists from all fields stop by, ask questions, and share new ideas. This sort of collaboration is what keeps our research moving forward.
