Life was imitating art today as Art & Design and IAD Instructor Jessica Miller posed beside MFA student Shanine Delph's sculpture about the balancing act that is motherhood.

STARS 2026 🌟 Let's hear from Haley Timcheck 💫

"My name is Haley Timcheck, and I am dual majoring in Art Education and Fine Arts at ISU. STARS gave me the opportunity to spend the entire summer focusing on my artistic process. My work is very intuitive and focuses on ideas, feelings, memories, or phrases that were present in my everyday life. During STARS, I pushed myself to experiment with processes I had never used before, including painting words directly onto canvas, bedazzling, and embroidering into painted surfaces. I was interested in combining
traditional painting materials with things that might feel unexpected in a painting,
such as glitter. I wanted my work to demand to be looked at.

My original ideas changed quite a bit throughout the process, which ended up being one of my favorite parts because I let my intuitive decisions guide me as I worked instead of forcing original ideas. Each piece is an experiment of color, texture, pattern, language, and the things that currently have my attention in everyday life. Across the five paintings, I have individually placed thousands of rhinestones. There is an almost absurd amount of glitter present in this body of work, I love it.

Being selected alongside four other students made STARS feel like being part of a small community of artists. Getting to see how differently each of us approached our work, share ideas, and receive feedback helped me understand not only my artistic process but the processes of others.

This experience has been extremely meaningful to me. STARS has helped me become more confident in being an artist while also reminding me why
experimenting is important. I want to carry that lesson into my future classroom and encourage students to make work that feels genuinely theirs. STARS helped to give me a space where I felt safe to take my ideas seriously and to make art that I love."

STARS 2026 🌟 Let's hear from Melanie Thoeming 💫

"Hello! My name is Melanie Thoeming, and I am one of the Summer 2026 STARS participants!

I am a Fine Arts major with my concentration being in painting. STARS is a summer long art project where students are chosen and provided the finances to create their desired work(s) and push themselves for discovery and improvement. My idea for this project was to portray how my brain converts music into painted scenes and abstract environments.

All my life, I have used art as a mouthpiece for how I feel inside, and the presence of music compliments that experience tremendously. I was originally planning on creating portraits of the musicians themselves, yet I think using their songs as inspiration makes it more personal because they are my interpretations of what their songs speak to me.

This opportunity was humbling, and I am very grateful for being able to do it. There were times when the stress got to me, but I persevered. Listening to the same songs over and over again wasn’t amazing, but I am glad that I chose music that I liked! I am proud of the work that I accomplished and implored my fellow classmates to throw caution to the wind when creating art much like I did for this project."

The scholarship is specifically offered through the Department of Art and Design." You can apply once a year during the spring semester, so keep an eye out on your Sycamore email! 📧 Students can receive anywhere between $1,000-2,000. We will see their finished exhibition this August! 💫

For the rest of our summer break, the Department of Art and Design will be focusing on STARS 🌟

This is a glimpse of the summer STARS meetings, which took place in FH Fairbanks. Here, the students are expressing their ideas, brainstorming, and showing their in-progress art to professors Chester and Nancy. Our STARS recipients this year are Varon Burress, Theo Harding, Melanie Thoeming, Haley Timcheck, and Liam Wilderman.
