Picking up clippers is easy. Building a recession-proof business with them is the hard part.

Standards matter. Education matters. Credentials tell strangers they can trust you before they ever sit in your chair. That doesn’t weaken our industry. It makes it stronger.

You don’t need a barber license until you need it.

Most vets don’t know this. 💈 The VA can pay you a monthly housing allowance while you train to become a licensed barber — real trade, real license, real business you can build. GI Bill® may cover tuition too, depending on eligibility. Texas City campus is VA/GI Bill®-approved; League City is out-of-pocket. Comment “BARBER” and we’ll break down what you actually qualify for. How much do barbers actually make in Texas?

Real range: $30,000–$55,000 in year one depending on your model.

Commission — lower risk, lower ceiling.
Booth rental — higher upside, need the clientele.
Ownership — the long game.

For veterans whose GI Bill® benefits may cover training — you may be receiving a monthly housing allowance the entire time you’re in school.

That’s a check hitting your account every month while you build toward a license.

Real talk: what does a barber actually make in Texas?

Not the inflated numbers. Not the best-case scenario. The real picture — booth rental, commission, ownership — and what the first 90 days look like when you're starting out.

If you're a veteran, here's what makes this different: eligible veterans may receive a monthly housing allowance from the VA while they're in school. That check doesn't stop when you graduate — your barber income starts stacking on top of it.

We break down the full income picture in this week's video. Link in comments.

5 benefits veteran barbers don’t know about — and most never use. 👇🏽

1️⃣ Free LLC in Texas — Your DD-214 permanently waives the $300 filing fee. Five years of franchise tax exemption on top of that.

2️⃣ SBA Veterans Advantage Loan — Up to $5 million. Reduced fees. Built specifically for veteran-owned businesses. That’s your shop build-out funded.

3️⃣ Free Legal Help — The Texas Veterans Commission connects veteran business owners with free legal services. Before you sign a lease on a suite or a shop — use this.

4️⃣ Federal Contracting Set-Asides — Veteran-owned barbershops can register to bid on government grooming contracts. Military bases. Federal facilities. Most barbers never touch this.

5️⃣ VA Home Loan — Buy the building your shop sits in instead of paying someone else’s mortgage. You already earned this benefit. Use it.

You went through the military. You have access to things civilian barbers don’t.

The license gets you in the chair. These benefits get you to ownership.
