Boricua College

Boricua College About Boricua College: Boricua College is in the vanguard as a small liberal arts college.

Founded in 1974 in New York City – with campuses in the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn - Boricua College is a fully accredited and chartered institution of higher learning. Boricua offers a range of marketable and goal-specific degrees for career-oriented students: Associate in Arts, Bachelor’s in Business Administration, Human Services, Childhood Education or Liberal Arts, and Master’s of Science

or Arts. Mission: Originally founded to address the educational needs of New York City’s Puerto Rican community, Boricua College provides equal opportunity in education and employment training for all qualified persons regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran status. As an innovative and non-traditional college, Boricua designs individualized learning programs which are pursued at the student’s pace towards their intellectual and career goals. As a liberal arts institution, Boricua develops the affective skills and values required for life-long learning and leadership. Description: Completed in 2010, the Boricua College Bronx Vertical Campus is a modern 14-story learning facility. It houses the college’s academic and administrative offices, and soon a 350-seat performance theater, a cultural center, and a College Prep program. All Boricua College Bronx Campus students benefit from close mentoring and individual attention by meeting one-on-one with their faculty “facilitator” weekly throughout the academic year. This individualized support approach is unique –students describe it as like having a “life coach” as well as a professor – and all students receive credit for this personalized instruction going toward their degree. With a 15:1 student-to-teacher ratio, students get the attention they may need to understand the curriculum and complete their assignments. At Boricua’s Bronx campus, students often characterize campus life as being part of a “family” where they always receive assistance required to get ahead. The Bronx campus offers a full-time schedule, with day and evening classes, and Saturday classes as well. Boricua is proud to welcome learners across a variety of ages—from 18 to over 50 years old—all taking advantage of a high quality education at Boricua College’s Bronx Campus.

On May 16th, we celebrated Bachelor's degree recipients from the Bronx and Manhattan campuses at the new Bronx Campus. Graduates achieved degrees in Human Services, Education and Business Administration. Dr. Alicea, President of the College, welcomed the students, urging them to join the College's Master's degree programs in Human Services, Education and Latin American and Caribbean Studies. "I know you are tired, after the heroic effort to achieve the bachelor's degree despite holding full-time jobs and being heads of household, managing children. But think of the Master's degree as two 15-week terms with a month's rest in between. That's all we ask you: to give us 30 more weeks, and you will leave here with the Master's."

To this end, the College awarded $1,000 financial assistance to every student who enrolled in one of its three programs and filled out an application form that evening!

The College wishes to acknowledge the efforts of the baccalaureate faculty, especially Dr. Basilisa Colon, Chair, Human Services, Dean of Generic Studies, Prof. Jose Israel Lopez and the Director of Admissions, Ms. Brenda Rodriguez for making this event such a success.

Now, Boricua is getting ready for its 2016 Commencement Exercises on May 20 at the Church of the Heavenly Rest at Two,5th Avenue (90th Street) from 6 to 8 PM.

"Boricua College has an excellent reputation as an academic institution in the Bronx. Recently, I was at a community meeting with our Admissions Director, Ms. Brenda Rodriguez, at the JCCA, near 149th Street and 3rd Avenue. I was delighted to hear so many agencies speak so highly of our institution. We are in a relationship with District 9 schools and are exploring similar relationships with District 7. Superintendent Elisa Alvarez of District 7 is coming to visit us soon. We hope to build similar relationships with educational, medical, legal, and human services agencies all over South Bronx, so that together we can build a better Bronx which is already on its way to do so. Plans to celebrate education in the Bronx Campus is underway. Soon you will hear from me, the Dean, Prof. Jose Israel Lopez and Brenda Rodriguez, the Director of Admissions about the Bronx Education Expo! Let's all get together and build our College, build the Bronx!" Shivaji Sengupta, Ph.D. Vice President.
