On August 26, despite the heat, we celebrated the start of the new academic year with our students in the Peters Hall courtyard. Continuing and new students join over drinks and snacks, met old friends and made new connections. Thank you to Hana Petr for organizing a lovely event and all our faculty colleagues who joined the get-together!

In July, thanks to the generosity of a gift by donors Dave and Dawn Gross, several of our students (David Paud, Marlee Peña, Leslie Iraheta, Khasanjon Bobokhojaev, and Mateo Sonaglia) were able to participate in the European Innovation Academy (EIA) in London, England.

The EIA is an intensive international entrepreneurship program that brings together university students, academics, and aspiring founders to develop startup ventures.

This year, EIA's London program combined an in-person experience in London with a two-week online acceleration phase for 720 participants from 85 universities, supported by more than 125 mentors and speakers, including experienced founders and executives from companies such as Google, Amazon, Meta, Shell, and others.

Drawing from the history of the sturdy, re-gifted holiday dessert, the authors introduce the concept of "fruitcaking" within professional circles. This phenomenon occurs when overwhelmed professionals repeatedly redirect unsolicited meeting requests to other busy colleagues, creating a cycle of meaningless referrals.

Such practices often lead to network fatigue and a significant erosion of trust between peers. To combat this, the text suggests that individuals should provide honest declines or offer helpful resources instead of merely passing people along. By seeking prior consent before making introductions and setting clearer engagement goals, professionals can foster more authentic and valuable connections.

If US Latinos were their own country, they'd be the fifth-largest economy in the world — ahead of the UK, France, and India. In this episode, we unpack what that number really means: the buying power, the business growth, and the workforce driving it. We look at where this economic engine is headed, why it's often overlooked, and what it signals for the future of business, leadership, and opportunity.

Another successful New Venture Fair is in the books! We had 67 teams from two universities and five high schools. The hall was filled with the sound of business pitches and engaging conversation.

A mountain of gratitude goes to our colleagues Kristin Bell and Mike Panesis - the hearts, minds, and hands behind the New Venture Fair, a small army of judges who completed a whole lot of deliberation in a short amount of time, our friends from California State University Channel Islands for participating (and winning more than one prize), our amazing participating high schools - ETHoS Entrepreneurship Academy (Thousand Oaks High School), Westlake High School, Newbury Park High School, Agoura High School, and Bakersfield Christian High.
