We are excited to share that JR Blackburn has been named as our next President and CEO, effective Oct. 12.

Blackburn brings more than 30 years of leadership across higher education, institutional advancement and community engagement. Most recently, he served as chief of staff in the Office of the President at Ohio State and also held senior roles at the University of Maryland (drove their $1.5B Fearless Ideas Campaign) and Ohio University (helping lead their $500M+ Promise Lives Campaign).

Known for his relationship-driven, collaborative approach, JR is uniquely equipped to expand support for our all our Rockets, initiatives and programs.

We are honoring 14 Rockets with the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Awards, recognizing their outstanding professional achievements, leadership and service that reflect the enduring impact of a UToledo education.

Schlembach will receive the Gold T Award, Palmer will receive the Daniel J. Saevig Blue T Award, and Rubin will receive the Edward H. Schmidt Outstanding Young Alum Award at the UToledo Alumni Association’s annual Homecoming Gala on Friday, Oct. 9.

UToledo has received nearly $2 million as part of a statewide initiative to create a no-cost pathway for graduate and professional students preparing for critical mental health careers.

In return, scholarship recipients will serve in eligible underserved Ohio communities for a period equal to their scholarship support, helping expand access to care and address workforce shortages across the state.

Dr. James Willey, a pulmonary physician at UToledo Health and holder of the George Isaac Chair In Cancer Research, has received a $200,000 Stand Up To Cancer grant to support a simple, noninvasive screening test for lung cancer.
