Congratulations to Sarah Harmych on officially earning her Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University! 🎓

Sarah began her scientific journey at The University of Toledo, where she conducted undergraduate research in the laboratory of Dr. Deborah Chadee. During her undergraduate training, Sarah published her own first-author manuscript with the Chadee lab, an impressive accomplishment that foreshadowed an outstanding research career.

Her Ph.D. dissertation, “Leveraging the Use of 3D Models to Identify and Target Novel Pathways for Colorectal Cancer Therapy,” focused on innovative approaches to advancing cancer research and therapeutic development.

We are incredibly proud of Sarah and excited to see where her scientific career takes her next. Congratulations, Dr. Sarah Harmych! 👏🔬

With the promotion of Dr. Heather Conti to Associate Dean of NSM, Dr. Scott Crawley has taken over the role of Director of Undergraduate Research Experiences in the MCDB Department. Dr. Crawley oversees all aspects of undergraduate research in the department, from holding individual and group discussions with students, to helping place students in labs within and outside the department, to hosting research presentations and guiding the community building of undergrad researchers. 🚀🔬🧬

🎉We’re pleased to share that Dr. Heather Conti, faculty member in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, has accepted the role as Associate Dean for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. She will officially begin her new position on June 8, 2026.👏👏👏

About Dr. Heather Conti:
Dr. Conti is a distinguished researcher, respected scholar and educator whose work focuses on host–pathogen interactions, oral immune function and anti-fungal immunity. She is widely recognized for her dedication to student mentorship and success, collaborative research and advancing scientific discovery across disciplines. Her leadership will be invaluable in strengthening the college’s academic excellence and expanding its research footprint.🧬🔬🚀

Our department celebrated Dr. John Plenefisch and his 30 years of service to the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Department of Biology/Biological Sciences/Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (yes, he made it through two name changes along the way). 🧬🎉
John will retire on June 5, and we are deeply grateful for his steadfast leadership as an instructor, associate dean, and interim chair of the department. His dedication, mentorship, and commitment to students and colleagues have left a lasting impact on our community. 👏📚
