Although Professor Elsa Lankford is retiring with us as a Full Professor, we especially want to recognize her contributions as Chair for the Department of Electronic Media & Film during her 2020 to 2022 tenure.

The academic year that she accepted the position, TU went virtual due to COVID. Developing innovative ways to solve the problems of hands-on media education during quarantine, Elsa helped our students, staff, and faculty navigate and succeed during that difficult period. She was a vocal advocate for equity and her leadership led to multiple lasting improvements for EMF. During her time as Chair, she was instrumental in the initial planning for the department for the renovation and rebuilding of the new Smith Hall which the department plans to move in to in Fall of 2027.

Our gratitude and best wishes go out to Elsa in her retirement!

EMF thanks Professor Elsa Lankford for her many contributions to the university and extends congratulations to her on her retirement.

Elsa is retiring as Full Professor. Her areas of expertise include audio production, digital audio post-production, film/media festivals, diversity in media, interdisciplinary art, sound art, and composing. Her scholarship included Citizen Impulse Response, regarding the use of echo chambers in musical recordings, social and mass media, and in the protest soundscapes of urban streets. She also wrote a chapter entitled “Breaking the Sound Barrier: The Importance of Interdisciplinary Audio Curriculum” in Audio Education: Theory, Culture, and Practice (Taylor and Francis).

In 2008 Elsa cofounded WAMMFest (Women And Minorities in Media Festival), an international short film and media event at Towson University within the Department of Electronic Media & Film dedicated to celebrating diverse voices in media production. Under Elsa’s direction WAMMFest grew into a highly competitive international festival. At its peak, the festival drew over 1,000 entries globally and featured screenings of dozens of short films, virtual reality pieces, and panel discussions. A unique aspect of the festival's history at Towson University is its heavy integration into the curriculum. Elsa developed specialized courses attached to the festival, giving students hands-on experience in festival planning, project management, judging, and programming.

Check back tomorrow for more from Elsa's career!
