Dear PRWR Students:

We’re happy to announce the continuation this year of fellowship for a PRWR student with a strong interest in creative writing. Anonymous donors have funded the Good Contrivance Fellowship, an award that allows a graduate student to spend two nights at a Carroll County farm and writer’s retreat. The award is intended to give a student-writer the solitude of a few days to finish or start a new project. The current award will fund a fellowship in FALL 2019.

Good Contrivance Farm, located in Carroll County near Reisterstown and Westminster, is a 501-c3 dedicated to encouraging literary culture and an appreciation of Maryland’s rural life. The farm is a working farm. The writer’s retreat is a renovated three-story loft apartment and part of the farm’s barn. Ron Tanner, an author who has published four books, runs the farm with his wife, Jill Eicher. For more information about the writer’s retreat, visit here.

A few stipulations:

• The winner must be an enrolled graduate student in PRWR at the time of the fellowship;

• The dates for the fellowship are subject to availability at Good Contrivance Farm and must be booked at least two months in advance.

• The fellowship is intended to give the student time away from pressures of work, family, roommates, or otherwise. Thus, no other visitors (or animals) can spend time with the student-writer at the retreat. The student must be able to take time away from any employment obligations.

• The student-writer will abide by the farm’s rules, which can be found on this page.

To apply, email to Geoff Becker ([email protected]) by May 10th, 2019:

• a writing sample of no more than 15 pages

• a letter of no more than two pages giving your reasons for wanting writing time to yourself and showing how you’ve made creative writing a significant part of your PRWR experience (through choice of classes, conference attendance, thesis work, etc.)

Please send all entry materials as PDFs. The winner will be chosen by the donors and announced later in May.

If you have any questions, please direct them to Geoff Becker.
