Towson University Environmental Science & Studies

Towson University Environmental Science & Studies Our Environmental Science and Studies programs were created to provide a pathway by which our students could develop this interdisciplinary perspective.

Understanding and resolving environmental problems at the local, regional, or global level requires an interdisciplinary perspective; it is necessary to understand the natural system that is being disturbed and also the human systems that create the disturbance. Most environmental problems resist solutions from any one discipline. Therefore our graduates gain familiarity with a range of approaches

from the natural sciences and the social sciences. Many of our classes and seminars will focus on local environmental problems from the adjacent urban/suburban area and their impact on the surrounding region and the Chesapeake Bay, but the lessons learned from analyzing these local problems are adaptable to other locales and situations. The Environmental Science and Studies (ESS) program offers interdisciplinary curricula at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The program draws on the talents and skills of faculty from across the university and prepares students to think critically about environmental issues and problems. All students select one of the specialized tracks available in their area of interest and complete a particular suite of courses.
