RPI Design Build Fly

RPI Design Build Fly Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Design/Build/Fly Chapter & Club. Feel free to stop by and see us! We promise we won't bite! Interested in becoming a sponsor?

Design/Build/Fly (DBF) is an international aircraft design competition in which student teams from universities across the world design, build, and fly a remote controlled aircraft. Each year the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) presents a new design challenge requiring the creation of a completely new aircraft. The competition is sponsored by the AIAA, Cessna Aircraft, a

nd Raytheon Missile Systems and is focused on the development of unmanned aerial vehicles. You can find out more about the competition at the Design/Build/Fly website: http://www.aiaadbf.org/. If you are a student interested in joining, we meet in Ricketts 403 every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 10. Also a shout out to our sponsors: RPI's MANE department, RPI's Engineering Department, Boeing, Solid Works, Hobby Town, and President Shirley Ann Jackson. Thank you all for your continued support. We appreciate everything you do for us. Feel free to email us!

This semester, RPI's DBF is beginning strong with inspiration and the drive to push boundaries, improve manufacturing techniques, and explore ideas!

Our overall mission is to develop a competitive R/C aircraft and apply the knowledge we learn in the classroom in a challenging interdisciplinary environment. With your support, our members can gain hands-on experience with exciting technology and ensure that the team can continue to grow and produce leaders in the engineering world.

weR Gold is a unique program that helps to raise dollars for student-run endeavors such as this. Please check out, https://impact.rpi.edu/project/18395 if you're interested in donating to support our ambitions!

Many thanks from the entire DBF team :)

Our first meeting will be held on August 30th from 8-10pm in Ricketts. Enter through the front doors (facing the '86 field) and head upstairs to the 2nd floor where we will have someone directing everyone to the room. We will be giving a quick introductory presentation to the club then we'll head upstairs for a lab tour and a glider design challenge!

We will be at table 225 in the Armory for the activities fair! Due to a bit of a mixup we aren't on the fair map yet.

Just because the wind is calm on the ground...

One of the more impactful test flights from the 2018 competition. 6 lbs of airplane vs. 13,170,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 lbs of Earth.

Come see us at the activities fair in the Armory on August 29th from 11am to 2pm! We welcome any and all majors. This year we will be looking heavily into new manufacturing techniques, such as composites and 3D printing, and developing flight controllers alongside our standard design phase. We will also be holding more RC pilot training, so pilots are welcome too!

Joe was not amused when the lady at UPS called the airplane 'fat' as we tried to ship it back to Rochester.

RPI Design Build Fly had a windy but smooth and successful Mission 1 flight this year in Wichita, KS at the AIAA Design Build Fly competition. We were unable to attempt Missions 2 and 3 due to weather delays, but are pleased to have placed 42nd out of 91 teams, an improvement on last year and an important stepping stone for years to come.

Hey everyone! Our WeR Gold sponsorship page is up and running! Here you can give us a bit of help in our mission to design, build, and fly more great r/c planes. We love what we do, and we want to continue to build as an organization and inspire new members in the years to come. Any donation is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
