Pi Lambda Phi NY Kappa Tau

Pi Lambda Phi NY Kappa Tau Pi Lambda Phi at RPI

The chapter at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the New York Kappa Tau chapter of Pi Lambda Phi.

In 1949 Kenneth Anderson, Branting, Hickey, Clough, Dick Morse, Reynolds, Robinson, Schlicht, Stattel, and Vallance started Kappa Tau as an independent entity at RPI. By 1952 they had become an official Pi Lambda Phi colony. Kappa Tau received an official charter as a chapter of Pi Lambda Phi in 1954, with Anderson as the founding president. First House

The first Kappa Tau house was located at th

e corner of Eighth Street and Eagle. Although this house has long since been torn down, the piano from the old house still remains and currently acts as the house mailboxes.

300 Pawling Ave

A jeweler by the name of George Harrison was the original owner of the land on which the house sits on now. He bought the property in 1877, and owned the land until his death at which time the land would be bought by Emma Kate Geer in the early 1900s. By 1935 the house had been sold again to Benjamin and Mollie Katz for $11,820. The Katz family would own the house for 35 years until it was given to their son Marvin who later transferred ownership to his wife Lois Katz. In 1969 the NYKT chapter of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity bought house from Louis for $51,000. LINKS:

Reunion and Homecoming ’16 at RPI is right around the corner.
While not on the “official” Calendar, there will be a series of Official and casual Events occurring all weekend for you to join in on.

There will be a strong contingent of Brothers from ’66 (50-year Club) and ’86 (neon parachute pants) too.

While the guys from ’66 never actually lived in the Chapter House on Pawling Avenue, they certainly were around to know first hand what it was like to live at 8th & Eagle.

There are many new things to see and experience at the Chapter House:
• See the new Living Room rich Corinthian leather couches
(still new car smell)
o The couches in the 60s were tan vinyl
o The couches in the 80s were plaid (oh so plaid) cloth

At the Pilam Convention this summer, Senior Travis Taylor ‘17 won the Rafer Johnson student athlete award; the third Kappa Tau Brother to receive it.

In addition, Roger Orloff ‘61 received the Big Pi; the highest award that Pi Lambda Phi awards to a person. Between that award and all of the ones Roger has received from the Institute and RPI RAA, he always has great stories to tell.

Current ongoing Projects include fixing the House; pipes get fixed, windows repaired, walls get repainted or removed… speaking of which, if you haven’t been to the House in a couple of years, be sure to visit the former site of the Pit & Cage – they are no more. The dividing wall was removed to make the room into a triple; it now referred to as Homie’s Mansion. Down in the Chapter room, the ever-growing Family Line chart keeps growing (the Chapter is over 750 Brothers) – get your little-little-little-little-little-little-little-little Brother to run errands for you! Also the old Composites were deteriorating from the elements and busted water pipes, so now there is a master composite Composite of all NY Kappa Tau Brothers. See what you used to look like with hair!

Currently the House is in full Rush-mode, so by the time of Reunion, there will be Pledges (ooops, New Members) running around to be dazzled by your stories of Back-in-the-Day exploits.

Oh and don’t forget, Seniors need job leads and Sophomores and Juniors are always looking for Intern positions… Help a Brother out!

A large contingent of current Pilam Brothers and recent Alumni play on the RPI Rugby team – This is an Event to cheer them on!

See Brothers run around without any pads too.
Those Brothers wanting to do both and attend the football halftime 50-year Club can easily do that too.
• Anderson Field is at the corner of Sage and 15th Street (next to E-Dorms)

• 5-6:30 pm — pre-Dinner Meet-up at Chapter
(Dinner location TBD)
While waiting for all your Classmates to get ready for dinner out in the Capital District, come meet at the Chapter to play Volleyball; Wiffleball; or try to beat Undergrads at Xbox One.

• Post-Dinner (random times all evening)
Since the Hockey Game was cancelled (again) for Reunion, stop by the Chapter all Evening for further Entertainment.
Or wander the downtown streets of Troy to see what the old watering holes now look like.
But you can be assured that Hijinks and Shenanigans will continue!
Maybe even a rendition or two of Jolly Laddies or Days-of-the-Week will be rendered.
