The University of Arizona R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy has received a full accreditation term for its Doctor of Pharmacy program, the longest term granted by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education or ACPE, following an evaluation this spring. The program is accredited through June 30, 2033.

"I am very pleased to congratulate the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy on earning full accreditation from ACPE," said President Suresh Garimella.

Dear PharmCAT Community,

It is hard to believe that I have already completed my first two weeks as Dean of the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy. These first days have been filled with introductions, discussions, and most importantly, opportunities to listen and learn.

I am honored to join this community. As a pharmacist through and through, I have spent my career committed to pharmacy and to preparing the next generation of professionals. And although my roots have been in Tennessee up to this point, my family and I are all in as we begin making the Tucson community our home.

In just two weeks, I have met incredible faculty, staff, and partners who care deeply about our mission. Through my conversations, I’ve been asking: What is something we absolutely must protect because it is important to who we are, and what is our greatest opportunity? The answers have helped me understand both our tremendous foundation and the possibilities ahead.

I believe our future should be a shared direction, not simply my vision as Dean. We will build on what already distinguishes us, identify areas where we can lead nationally, strengthen strategic partnerships, and support innovation in education and practice. Through it all, our students will remain at the center of everything we do.

I am especially looking forward to welcoming our students back to campus. Coming from a health sciences center environment, I am enjoying the energy and excitement of a vibrant campus, and I cannot wait to see that energy fully return when all our students arrive in the coming weeks.

There is much to learn and much to do, but I am incredibly optimistic about what lies ahead. The accomplishments of this College have been driven by good people, strong teams, and committed leaders. My role is to listen, bring people together, and help us determine where we want to go next.

Thank you for the Southwestern hospitality. I look forward to meeting more of you and working together to take our College to new heights.

Kushal Shah, PharmD, is building a career where pharmacy, law, and health policy converge. A 2026 graduate of the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, Shah also earned a graduate certificate in Health Law for Health Professionals before beginning his JD at the University of North Carolina School of Law this fall. Through internships and rotations spanning pharmacy associations, legal practice, and national standards organizations, he has focused on the regulatory forces that shape patient care. With long-term aspirations in pharmacy legislation, board service, and legal education, Shah is charting a non-traditional path dedicated to improving healthcare policy and expanding patient access.

The University of Arizona is earning national recognition as a leader in innovation, ranking No. 3 for producing unicorn companies relative to its size and No. 5 for producing unicorn founders.

The R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy has been a key part of that success. Research from the college led to the launch of SinfoníaRx, a healthcare technology company that transformed medication management and improved patient outcomes before its acquisition in 2017.

In the article, Money Matters in Pharmacy Training: A Preceptor’s Role in Shaping Financial Awareness, Jose Bermudez-Rodriguez, PharmD, Janet Cooley, PharmD, and Suzanne Larson, PharmD, highlight the transition from pharmacy student to pharmacist is about far more than passing rotations and licensure exams. Final-year learners are simultaneously navigating residency and job decisions, managing significant student loan debt, evaluating benefits packages, budgeting for licensure costs, and preparing for financial independence.

Preceptors have an opportunity to mentor beyond clinical practice by sharing practical insights on student loan repayment, budgeting, job offers, and long-term financial planning. Elizabeth Hall-Lipsy, JD, MPH, associate professor of practice and associate dean of faculty and academic affairs at the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, has received the Henry and Phyllis Koffler Award for Excellence in Public Service/Outreach in recognition of her transformative leadership in rural health education and community-engaged pharmacy practice. The Koffler Award honors innovative outreach that creates meaningful public impact, and Hall-Lipsy's sustained contributions to education, scholarship, and service exemplify the University of Arizona's land-grant mission.

Over more than 17 years at the University of Arizona, Hall-Lipsy has expanded the Rural Health Professions Program into one of the nation's leading rural health training pipelines, preparing pharmacists to serve rural, border, tribal, and other underserved communities across Arizona. Her work has helped deliver more than 336,000 hours of direct patient care while strengthening the state's rural pharmacy workforce.

The R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy was honored to host Meijo University and Aichi Gakuin University (AGU) this past spring, welcoming nine students and three faculty members to tour the campus, participate in lectures from University of Arizona faculty, and learn about pharmacy education in the United States. The visit, which took place over nine days, is part of a study abroad program that the college has created in conjunction with multiple Japanese institutions as a way to offer cultural, pharmaceutical, and educational exchange opportunities for students.

“As someone who was born and raised in Japan and later came to the United States as an exchange student, I have experienced firsthand the impact that international education can have on a person’s life,” shared Akiko Ota, RKCCOP Admissions and Scholarships Coordinator. “Working with Japanese students and faculty through our international programs allows me to give back to my home country while strengthening global connections through pharmacy education.”

University of Arizona researcher Xinglong Wang, PhD, has led a breakthrough study that could reshape the future of ALS research. Published in Nature Aging, the team's work identifies a promising experimental drug that targets the TDP-43 protein, protecting nerve cells in both mouse models and human motor neurons. The drug crossed the blood-brain barrier, slowed disease progression in preclinical testing, and could have implications beyond ALS, including for Alzheimer's disease and LATE, where TDP-43 pathology is also a key feature. More than a decade after the Ice Bucket Challenge raised global awareness, this research represents an encouraging step toward new treatments for devastating neurodegenerative diseases.
