Congratulations to Laura Meredith, the 2026 Keating Family BIO5 Professor!

Meredith, a professor in the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Science, was selected because of her translational work in addressing global challenges related to climate change and ecosystem resilience, dedication to advancing the transdisciplinary field of ecosystem genomics at the University of Arizona (and beyond), and extensive contributions towards building capacity and community in areas relevant to BIO5’s mission.

The Keating Family BIO5 Professor is a distinction given to a BIO5 faculty member who exemplifies the characteristics of interdisciplinary biosciences research excellence, collegiality, spirit of mentorship and engagement, and strong communication skills. It is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Keating family who have been BIO5 supporters and friends since its founding.

BIO5 member Meredith Hay has harnessed a career’s worth of expertise in cardiovascular and brain physiology to develop a tiny peptide that she hopes will have an outsize impact on neurological health.

This year's BIO5 Postdoctoral Fellows include 10 exceptional early-career scientists from across the University of Arizona, representing 15 departments and seven colleges. Their work spans disciplines, sparks new collaborations and advances research that improves lives.

Join us for the annual BIO5 Research & Innovation Showcase, an opportunity to learn about research supported by BIO5, exchange ideas and build new collaborations across the University of Arizona.

BIO5 member Alexander Bucksch and U of A student researchers are examining hidden root structures to understand how plants absorb nutrients, use water and withstand environmental stresses such as drought and poor soil.

Their work combines plant science with new approaches for studying complex root systems, helping reveal traits that could inform efforts to develop crops better equipped for challenging growing conditions.

A research collaboration that began during a sabbatical in Japan is offering new insight into how the brain forms and maintains memories.

BIO5 member Amelia Gallitano and collaborators studied a gene involved in learning and memory, finding that increasing its activity may strengthen memory. The findings could help researchers better understand changes in memory associated with aging, dementia and mental health conditions.
