Retirement is bittersweet. It marks the close of a meaningful career and the beginning of a new chapter. It is also a reminder of how much the people we work alongside shape our days, our culture, and our community.

Devorah Coryell spent the last decade bringing integrative medicine to medical students and residents across the country through the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine elective rotation.

She did more than facilitate a program. She changed perspectives, built confidence, and reminded young physicians of the great responsibility and capability they have.

Prior to her work with AWCIM, Devorah established the wellness programs at Pritikin Longevity Center and Canyon Ranch. A long time colleague of Andrew Weil, M.D. , her presence will be missed and her impact long lasting.

Happy retirement, Devorah!

Medical schools across the country are expanding their focus on nutrition, lifestyle, and whole-person care. The next frontier is residency.

This week, the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine met with CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz to share a model that is transforming residency training across the country.

Integrative Medicine in Residency (IMR) is a 100-hour, on-demand curriculum already embedded in more than 160 residency programs nationwide, including Stanford Children’s Hospital, UC Davis, Scripps, and Hennepin Health.

IMR prepares physicians to meet the realities of modern practice, where chronic disease, mental health concerns, and lifestyle-related conditions account for much of the care patients need.

Through training in nutrition, lifestyle medicine, integrative approaches to chronic disease and pain, and mind-body medicine, residents gain practical tools to deliver more effective, preventative, healing-oriented, patient-centered care. The IMR curriculum also supports physician well-being during one of the most demanding periods of medical training.

The future of health care will depend on more than new technologies and treatments. It will require physicians trained to prevent disease, address its root causes, and care for the whole person.

Residency is where that transformation begins.

Last week, Stephen Dahmer, MD, and Ann Marie Chiasson, MD, met with Rick Woychik, PhD, Senior Advisor at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to discuss the agency's strategic priorities for identifying the root causes of chronic disease, strengthening the nation's health resilience, and advancing equitable, data-driven prevention strategies.

Prior to this role, Dr. Woychik served as Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

The conversation offered valuable insight into NIH's priorities and what lies ahead for integrative medicine. We appreciate the opportunity to learn from Dr. Woychik and look forward to continuing the dialogue.

What does it mean to truly see a patient?

Dr. Stephen Dahmer, director of the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, joined the W.A. Franke Honors College podcast "It's an Honor" to explore that question, and the values that have shaped his approach to medicine: curiosity, whole-person care, and the belief that a patient's cultural and personal context is never beside the point.

From his early work as a medical interpreter to his time living in Brazil, Dr. Dahmer's path into integrative medicine has been defined by listening, learning across disciplines, and a commitment to prevention and partnership.

Listen to the full conversation here:

In this episode of It's an Honor, Dr. Pollard speaks with Dr. Stephen Dahmer—Director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona—about the role of curiosity, global experience, and interdisciplinary thinking in shaping modern healthcare.
