Dear HAS Family & Friends,

It is with profound sadness that I share with you the passing of our former colleague, friend, and mentor, Professor Emeritus Robert E. Dickinson, who passed away on September 11, 2026.

Bob was a valued member of the University of Arizona community and served as a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences for nine years before moving to the Georgia Institute of Technology and, subsequently, The University of Texas at Austin. His time at the University of Arizona was an important part of his distinguished career and of the history of atmospheric and climate sciences at the University.

Prior to joining the University of Arizona, Bob spent 22 years as a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). He later served as a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech for nine years and then joined the Jackson School at The University of Texas at Austin in 2008, where he remained until his retirement in 2018. He received his B.S. in chemistry and physics from Harvard University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in meteorology from MIT.

Throughout his illustrious career, Bob received numerous awards and honors from the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the American Meteorological Society (AMS). He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1988 and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2002 and was elected a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2006. Bob was a true giant in climate system science, atmospheric dynamics, and Earth system modeling. His pioneering scientific contributions helped shape our understanding of the climate system and influenced generations of researchers. He was also an exceptional mentor and a generous and valued colleague, remembered by many for his intellectual curiosity, scientific insight, and commitment to advancing the field.

Bob’s connection to the University of Arizona remained an important part of his career and legacy. His spouse, Dr. Rong Fu, was also a faculty member in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona before joining the Jackson School at UT Austin in 2008. She has been a Professor in Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences at UCLA since 2016.

I would like to express my sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to Rong and to Bob’s family, as well as to his many friends, colleagues, collaborators, and mentees around the world, including those in the University of Arizona community.

The Water Whys Visual Science Communication Seminar series is returning for its 8th semester of conversations about how we effectively communicate science visually!

Join us next Friday, September 25 from noon-1pm ET, 9-10am AZ time. Global Youth Ambassador and Self-Made Changemaker Jacques Balolage will be joining us from Gana in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This continues our efforts to provide an expansive, international perspective on visual science communication.

Water is part of everyday life, but it can also become a challenge for communities facing climate risks, displacement, poverty, and disability. In this talk, Jacques Balolage will share his perspective on how water, rainfall, and environmental changes affect daily life in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Through visual storytelling, personal observations, and experiences from the community, he will explore how people with disabilities experience these challenges and why their perspectives should be included in discussions about water, climate, and resilience.

Jacques will showcase how we can use visual tools such as infographics, photography, and accessible educational media to translate complex water quality and purification data for local communities and decision-makers. He'll be focusing on how simple, inclusive visuals can bridge language and literacy barriers, ensuring critical health and sanitation messaging reach everyone.

Last week the students in the HWRS 350 "Principles of Hydrology" class practiced water quality testing at the UofA Turtle Pond: temperature, pH, alkalinity, TDS/EC, DO, and turbidity. These are excellent workforce-ready skills the students will be adding to their resumes! Plus, we all enjoyed working together in the shade of palm trees and in the company of turtles and little fishes😃🌴🐢💧

We are proud to announce that Dr. Bo Guo has been elected Vice Chair of the 2028 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Flow and Transport in Permeable Media, alongside Eleonora Secchi of ETH Zurich. The two will go on to serve as Chairs of the 2030 conference (location TBD).

The Flow and Transport in Permeable Media GRC has a long history, dating back to 1973. Held every two years, it has become one of the premier international scientific meetings in the porous media community, bringing together researchers from academia, national laboratories, and industry to discuss emerging and often unpublished research in flow and transport across a broad range of natural and engineered systems. Many of the previous Chairs are among the most prominent scientists in our field, and we are very proud that Dr. Guo is among those scientists.

Dr. Guo said, "I am very excited to have the opportunity to help lead this conference and contribute to this scientific community."
