RISING STARS + NATIVE SOAR

The Rising Stars H-STEM Summer Camp at the Pascua Yaqui Tribe (PYT) Guadalupe Education Center was an incredible week filled with learning, discovery, culture, and fun.

In collaboration, Joanna (Rising Stars coordinator) and Myrhea (Native SOAR coordinator) began each day with icebreakers and hands on activities that helped the students build connections, strengthen teamwork, and celebrate their shared heritage.

The week long program kicked off with curriculum designed to engage our 6th–12th grade participants, while discovering educational interests and future goals. Throughout the week, our student leaders stepped into the roles of:

• environmental scientists by designing and building their own water filtration systems,
• public health advocates as they created healthy meal plans, calculated calorie intake, and examined mock patient blood samples to identify characteristics of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
• Indigenous food scientists through the harvest of nopales—a traditional and nutritious food known for its health benefits.
• Indigenous engineers and architects as they put their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test during a marshmallow tower challenge and catapult launching activity.

Students also received a special visit from a Pascua Yaqui Youth Council representative who inspired them to become leaders and active voices in their community and beyond.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Pascua Yaqui Guadalupe Education Center team for providing meals, supporting activities and lessons, and warmly welcoming us into their community. Together, we are one Indigenous Nation, working hand in hand to encourage, empower, and prepare the next generation of Indigenous leaders, innovators, and changemakers.

We are more than a class.
We are COMMUNITY.
We are FAMILY.

“This course made me and others who share the experience that comes with being an Indigenous student in higher education feel visible in an environment that does not fully acknowledge the unique challenges that we face…This course served as a safe space where I feel as if my voice was heard.”

🌿FIELD EXPERIENCE🌿

We were honored to support our ITEP family during the 2026 “Around the Fireplace: Strengthening Our Languages” Field Experience in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Led by Oklahoma Kickapoo Language Director Dr. Mosiah Bluecloud, ITEP teachers and teacher candidates deepened their language knowledge and strengthened the skills needed to teach their languages. Alongside their Knowledge Holders and Language Mentors, participants grew in confidence, understanding, and connection to one another.

A special thank you to our dear friends and mentors, Drs. Valerie Shirley and Jeremy Garcia, for inviting us to be part of this inspiring experience. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn, share, and grow together.

📣 If you are Interested in learning more about ITEP or applying for the Spring 2027 cohort, please contact ITEP Coordinator Ingrique at [email protected] for more information.

🌸NEXT STEPS🌸

Myrhea first joined Native SOAR in 2018–19 as a standout undergraduate student in our course. From the very beginning, her gifts as a leader and community builder were evident in the way she supported her peers and showed up for her K–12 mentees.

In fall 2019, Myrhea returned as a first-year graduate student in the Center for the Study of Higher Education, pursuing her master’s degree in Higher Education. From 2019–2022, she served as a Native SOAR Graduate Assistant, taking on the roles of mentor coach, course instructor, and program coordinator. Her dedication, leadership, and care helped shape the experiences of countless students and mentees.

After a brief break, Myrhea rejoined Native SOAR in 2023–24 as our first-ever Outreach Specialist. In this role, she strengthened relationships with campus and community partners, developed K–12 mentoring curriculum, and played a key role in expanding our mentoring program.

Following her time as Coordinator at Native American Student Affairs, Myrhea returned once again to Native SOAR as our Program Coordinator. Drawing on her strengths as a loving and supportive campus relative—and a true “Deadly Auntie”—she brought joy, connection, and healing to our community through gatherings, celebrations, and campus-wide events.

While Myrhea’s contributions have been instrumental to the growth and impact of Native SOAR, what we will miss most is her unwavering hope and loving presence. Even during the most challenging times, she had a remarkable ability to uplift those around her with positivity, encouragement, and care.

We will miss Myrhea and her kind heart deeply, but we know our paths will cross again.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate Myrhea’s return home! If you missed it, don’t worry — Myrhea will be on campus until 6/22.

🌸Special thank you to Myrhea’s family for bringing the balloon tower, flowers, and cupcakes! 🌸

✨Shoutout Cafe Santa Rosa for coming in clutch with amazing catering!✨

💙NATIVE SOAR OPEN HOUSE in COE 302💙

Thank you to everyone who joined us—in person and in spirit—as we celebrated the start of a new chapter in our new campus home! 🎉

From 2018–2025, Room 327, also known as “the Fishbowl,” served as our course/program hub. As our team and partnerships continued to grow, so did our need for space.

Over the years, we expanded into additional offices in the Administration Building (previous location of the Office of the Provost) and the College of Education (COE).

In Fall 2024, we transitioned out of the Admin Building and into another COE space. For more than a year, our team worked across three different locations before finally coming together this spring!

Our Open House was a wonderful celebration of our journey, growth, and future. We LOVED sharing updates and spending time with our campus and community supporters!

We extend our heartfelt thanks to COE Dean Regina Deil-Amen and Department Head Dr. Leslie Gonzales for their support throughout every transition and for helping make this new shared space possible.

Special thank you to .charcuterie for creating a beautiful and delicious spread for our guests! 🧀✨

Here’s to new beginnings and the exciting work ahead!
