SAVE THE DATE: CAPLA's Graduation Ceremony Scheduled for Sunday, May 16, 7 p.m. at Arizona Stadium! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŽ‰

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and pre-show events will begin then. The ceremony combines UArizona commencement and CAPLA convocation, and also includes the College of Fine Arts and College of Humanities. It will be livestreamed and recorded.

There will be a central student RSVP system that opens in April. Students will be notified by the UArizona commencement team once the system is live. All graduating students should RSVP, whether participating in the live ceremony or not, so that we may ensure all graduates are acknowledged.

Please note that all event details are tentative and subject to change. We appreciate your patience as we work to announce specifics about this exciting event.

New solar panels and a rooftop garden on the university's ENR2 building not only generate electricity but also create environmental research opportunities in an ever-expanding desert city.

Research teams led by Greg Barron-Gafford, associate professor in the School of Geography, Development and the Environment, and School of Landscape Architecture and Planning assistant professor Kirk Dimond and professor Margaret Livingston will plant native desert species in the rooftop garden.

"These plants will not only supply ecosystem services for pollinators such as bees, birds and bugs, but in doing so, support local agriculture," Dimond said. As the plants grow, the team will examine the differences between agrivoltaic gardening and plant growth away from solar panels.

Construction of a rooftop garden and solar panels atop the University of Arizona's ENR2 building is complete. The site will not only generate electricity, but also create environmental research opportunities.

The way Las Vegas has been developed is a huge contributor to the heat faced by poorer communities, according to Ladd Keith, an expert in urban planning and climate change at the University of Arizona. Itโ€™s a simple equation: the more concrete and less green space, the hotter the neighborhoods. If youโ€™ve ever walked barefoot across a parking lot on a hot day, you understand why โ€” the pavement absorbs heat. Itโ€™s an issue some local officials see themselves.

โ€œWe have paved paradise here in Southern Nevada,โ€ said Justin Jones, the Clark County commissioner for District F. โ€œIn a lot of the lower income areas, there is ample asphalt, but woefully insufficient tree coverage and shade structures. In some of the true urban and older areas, there is nothing.โ€

As climate change worsens, mounting temperatures in Las Vegas are becoming an increasingly significant environmental justice issue.
