The NAMA Program at the University of Arizona

The NAMA Program at the University of Arizona Master of Arts Program in Native American Languages and Linguistics One of our faculty members is the director of AILDI. This program is in its tenth year.

The NAMA degree program is designed specifically for Native American students who wish to acquire the requisite training needed to work on maintaining, revitalizing, and documenting their native languages. Students complete the degree in one academic year plus two summers doing coursework in the American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI). A few similar programs have been developed arou

nd the country (University of Pittsburgh, University of Utah-Salt Lake City, and, more recently MIT, for instance) but the caliber of the UA department and its connections to American Indian communities in Arizona and throughout the Southwest make our program exceptional.
