ITKI US

ITKI US ITKI US initiative fosters the gathering of detailed information about traditional techniques and sustainable technologies used by ancient cultures.

Promoted by UNESCO since 2010, and formally associated on July 3rd, 2015, with the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme (UNESCO-WWAP), the International Traditional Knowledge Institute (ITKI) studies and promotes Traditional Knowledge (TK) and its use in all areas of human endeavour. The International Traditional Knowledge Institute, U.S. Chapter (ITKI US) was formed with the support of the Uni

versity of Arizona, the City of Tucson and Pima County to further the scope of the ITKI initiatives in North America. Its aim is to contribute to the preservation of TK systems by cultivating regional communities, who are invested in the preservation of local TK. While North American TK systems are the focus of its efforts, ITKI US strongly encourage the contribution of TK from around the world.

In search of Traditional and Living Heritage of Nanjing, the UNESCO Creative City of Literature, we found ourselves standing at the very genesis of formal literary discipline.

We were honored to visit the site where, in A.D. 439, the Chinese School of Literature was founded (pictured), blazing a global trail for literature as a separate academic field.

We are here on a mission to propose a powerful cultural re-connection.

While these plaques mark the preservation of formal text and print, we are uncovering the โ€œunwrittenโ€ stories of human kind. Tracing the legacy of the Silk Road, we are finding that the proverbs, folk tales, and domestic poetry shared over the kitchen table while making flour-based foods are, in themselves, a vital and millennia-old form of oral literature.

We are launching "Bฤo Zhฤซ Jiฤn (ๅŒ…ไน‹้—ด)โ€, a dedicated initiative to transform these fleeting kitchen stories into a permanent and accessible participatory archiveโ€”a 'living library' of intangible heritage.

We invite the Nanjing Literature Centerโ€”the descendants of that original Schoolโ€”to join us in this vision, bringing their unmatched literary authority to help us validate, curate, and preserve the deep 'wisdom of the oven' for the entire UCCN.

During the Traditional Arts Forum, January 25-27, 2026, we attempt to answer and propose solutions to finding sustainable ways to protect the โ€œtraditional artsโ€ of the world.

Can heritage preservation be modeled with economic justice in mind? At the Traditional Arts Forum in Riyadh, we proposed โ€˜The Journey of Weavingโ€™ projectโ€”connecting traditional weavers across the Arab world through fair value chains, digital documentation about the knowledge keepers, and direct market access. Starting with communities like Bedouin Al Sadu weavers, weโ€™re recommending to build networks where knowledge keepers control their heritage and earn dignified livelihoods. Join the conversation. โ€
