Postdoctoral position in Veterinary Epidemiology at UC Davis

POSITION DESCRIPTION

A Postdoctoral Scholar position is available at the UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center (VMTRC) in Tulare, CA https://www.vmtrc.ucdavis.edu. The Postdoctoral Scholar will work with a multidisciplinary research team, focusing on implementing selective dry cow therapy programs on dairies with automatic milking systems. The position responsibilities will include the design and implementation of mastitis research projects on dairies, data analysis, communication of research outcomes with the scientific community and stakeholders, and development of research proposals. The qualified candidate should have a strong background in epidemiology, statistics, dairy cattle production or a related field, and proven record in scientific publication. Knowledge of database management and ability to work with a statistics software such as Stata, R or SAS is required. The candidate is expected to be proficient in written and oral English and possess excellent communication skills as the candidate will be working with a multi-disciplinary team of veterinarians, milk quality specialists, epidemiologists, extension specialists, producers, and graduate and undergraduate students. The initial appointment will be for 12 months with a possible extension, depending on funding availability and performance. The salary and benefits will be provided based on UC Davis policy for the Postdoctoral Scholars.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education: The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Animal Science, Statistics, or a related field.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start):
• Strong publication records, or the potential for developing one.
• Strong knowledge of statistical analysis software (Stata, R or SAS).
• Experience in designing and performing field and lab-based experiments.
• Experience in leading research projects and research teams.
• Potential to write grants and high-quality scientific papers.
• Excellence in writing and oral communication.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of the team and diligently to meet deadlines.

2020 American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Award of Excellence given to UCDavis, SVM Professor and Director of the VMTRC, Dr. Terry Lehenbauer!

Presented at the 53rd AABP Annual Conference, September 26, 2020, this award was established in 1989 and is given annually by the AABP Board of Directors. Candidates for the award must be a member who is nominated from teaching, research, industry or government areas. The nominee's professional activities must have had a consistent and direct influence on daily activities of veterinarians in bovine practice. Selection criteria include the following:

1. Contributions to continuing education for bovine practitioners.

2. Active participation in organized veterinary medicine and/or specialty boards.

3. Relationship with and contributions to the bovine industry.

4. Publications that have had a significant impact on the practice of bovine medicine in the past two years.

5. Regulatory or legislative activities during the past two years that have enhanced the practice of bovine medicine.

AABP 2020 Graduate Students Award!
Our very own Ainhoa Valldecabres won the AABP 2020 Research Summaries Graduate Students Award (3rd place) and comes with $500.00. Ainhoa presented, "Associations of serum calcium and subclinical hypocalcemia at calving with productive, reproductive and health outcomes in multiparous Jersey cows". The competition was stiff at this national conference with an initial screening before the judging. She will be graduating December 2020 with a Ph.D. in Animal Biology.
