As we are counting down the days for DruidCity48, DCGM is again spotlighting influential voices in filmmaking!
Marquette Jones has worn many proverbial hats as a beloved and immensely talented producer, director, and professor at the University of Alabama. Marquette has been the driving force behind several award winning short films that have been included in international film festivals and featured on television. Additionally, she has collected a plethora of accolades for her screenwriting, producing, and cinematography skills. Outside of her numerous accomplishments, Marquette was an enthusiastic mentor for women in media and founded the Directing Magic Podcast to highlight the intellect and perspectives of women creatives.

Tragically, Marquette passed away earlier this year, leaving behind a rich legacy that will only continue to guide the ambition of women filmmakers across the world. Less than one week until the kick-off of DruidCity48!! In preparation for the competition, DCGM will be sharing advice from pioneering women in film throughout the following week. Today’s featured quote is from studio executive, content producer, and professional executive coach Kisha Imani Cameron. Cameron is most notable for her illumination of BIPOC voices in filmmaking through her establishment of the Focus Features Africa First Short Film Program for African filmmakers. We hope that Cameron’s quote encourages you to explore your identity and incorporate your experiences as valuable influences in your filmmaking process!

We're wrapping up this week with a from last year's camp! We love seeing our UA interns working side-by-side with campers for hands-on learning. (And, come on, we're definitely loving the GRLS RULE t-shirt.)

Taking it back again with a ! This great photo from our 2018 camp was taken by the incomparable Sabina Vafina, and we love how it captures so many different kinds of girls-- across all ages and cultural backgrounds-- working together thoughtfully around a camera. We think more film sets should look like this!

Happy ! We love this candid pic from the very first Druid City Girls Media Camp way back in 2017. We've grown a lot since that first camp, but we think this picture represents some of the things that haven't changed in the last three years. We're still all about having fun with cameras and bringing girls together!

Meet our team! Dr. Barbara Jane Brickman, the Program Director and Founder of DCGM, is an Associate Professor of Media and Gender Studies at UA. Her work has appeared in Camera Obscura, The Journal of Film and Video, Discourse, and Journal of Popular Music Studies. Since the publication of her first book, New American Teenagers: The Lost Generation of Youth in 1970s Film (2012), she has written a volume on the film Grease for the Cinema and Youth Cultures series (2018) and is currently working on a manuscript on le***an camp in American popular culture.

"As a group, we were also unanimous in our belief that the camp should be available to all girls, regardless of their socio-economic background. In fact, we identified a clear need to reach out specifically to underserved and less advantaged girls, who often cannot afford high tech media camps and who typically remain invisible or are negatively stereotyped in popular representations of 'girlhood.'"
