Book Arts Profs Anna Embree and Sarah Bryant returned to Havana in April to initiate a new project with artist Dania Fleites featuring the poetry of Puerto Rico based poet Nicole Cecelia Delgado, teach a box making course at the Conservation Lab within the University of San Gerónimo, and tour the almost completed Santa Clara School of Preservation and Conservation, due to open to students in the fall. It was wonderful to reconnect with our Cuban friends, and we hope to return with students in November!

Students in BA 541 this week created sheets of rag paper from start to finish. From cutting up T-shirts made of natural fibers to dipping the mould and deckle into the vat, students learned the details of paper making that determine a good quality sheet. Technique led to creativity and students discovered ways to layer pulps to create varied and complex cotton sheets.

This past month Professor Kyle Holland and two book arts students had the opportunity of taking part in the Third Cohort of the Gandhi King Scholarly Exchange Initiative. Each year, ten students from across many regions of India and ten students from either Stillman College or The University of Alabama study the life and leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the history of nonviolent movements, students have opportunities to learn and create socially engaged art.

Seen here are students participating in a book arts workshop led by Professor Holland, artist Jo Yarrington, and artist Atul Bhalla. Students interacted with the Lodi Gardens to deconstruct and reconstruct a book during the India Residency.
