Last month, Dr. Kartik had the opportunity to rotate with the Sports Medicine Department and join the Sports Medicine Fellows in providing sideline coverage at University of Alabama athletic events.

The experience offered a unique opportunity to learn more about the multidisciplinary care of collegiate athletes and the important role that mental health plays in overall athlete health, performance, and well-being.

As our psychiatry residency program continues to grow, we are excited about opportunities to further collaborate with the outstanding Behavioral Health and Sports Medicine teams already serving UA Athletics. We hope to continue building relationships across disciplines and exploring ways psychiatry can complement the excellent resources already in place to provide comprehensive, integrated care for Alabama student-athletes. We are so grateful to everyone who made this rotation possible and look forward to continued collaboration in the future!

Did you know?!

One of The University of Alabama’s newest landmarks is also one of its oldest. The beautifully restored Bryce Main is now home to the Catherine and Pettus Randall Welcome Center, which opened in 2024. It is where thousands of future students and families begin their Alabama experience.

But Bryce Main’s story runs much deeper. Originally constructed in the 1860s as the Alabama Insane Hospital under the leadership of Dr. Peter Bryce, the building became a landmark in the evolution of mental health care in our state. Today, its restoration preserves an important piece of Alabama history while honoring the progress that has been made in understanding and treating mental illness.

For our Program, Bryce Main represents a unique connection between our past and our future. Its history reflects how far mental health care has come, while our residents and faculty continue the work of advancing compassionate psychiatric care right here in West Alabama.

It serves as a powerful reminder that the story of mental health care in Alabama continues to evolve, and we’re honored to help shape its next chapter!

Learn more about the why behind our residents!

“I chose the University of Alabama Psychiatry Residency because I wanted broad, rigorous clinical training within a close-knit, supportive community. During the interview process, I was impressed by the faculty’s approachability and genuine investment in residents’ education and well-being. I was also drawn to the program’s diverse clinical experiences, which offer opportunities to work with patients across diagnoses, settings, and stages of life. The chance to live in a vibrant college town was an added benefit.”

After completing her fellowship, Dr. Amandossova served as an Assistant Professor at Texas Childen’s Hospital.

Dr. Amandossova is passionate about providing compassionate, ethical, and high-quality mental health care to children and adolescents, and we are thrilled to welcome her back to Alabama!

As part of our training, PGY-1s complete the required Primary Care rotations alongside our Family Medicine Residency Program, including 6 weeks of inpatient primary care and 12 weeks of outpatient primary care. These experiences help residents develop a deeper understanding of whole-person care and the many factors that influence a patient’s physical and mental health.
