“We all view it as an egregious, lazy, copy-paste bill in search of a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist,” Sara McDaniel, a professor of special education and the president of the UA AAUP, said of HB580. McDaniel said the public often misunderstands tenure as a guarantee of lifetime employment, when in practice it is designed to protect academic inquiry.

“The purpose of our tenure is so that we should be able to be curious and push boundaries and conduct research that’s never been done before, and think critically,” she said. “It doesn’t make sure that you never lose your job.”

HB580 came out of nowhere, had a hearing scheduled during spring break when legislators knew faculty would be away, and was moved out of committee with no discussion on Wednesday. That's not okay.
