Department of Architecture

The Construction Science Department provides professional training in construction management. The curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Construction Science and Management can be completed in four years and includes courses in general studies and physical sciences, construction materials and systems, architectural technology, surveying, construction management and

business. Graduates who complete the Construction Science and Management Program enter the building industry as professionals who are capable of performing in a number of capacities. The curriculum endeavors to produce professionals who are managers of people, finance, time and physical resource, and who are knowledgeable of the standards of quality required of all trades employed during the construction process. The Construction Science and Management program at Tuskegee is one of the oldest construction baccalaureate programs in the country. Its roots can be traced back to the trade orientation that Tuskegee had in the early twentieth centure. Its mission at one time was to provide skilled craftsmen who were capable of building sound structures and who would ultimately strive to become general contractors. The skills that are required of its graduates are more comprehensive. Construction graduates are required to appreciate the work of the craftsman and know the standards of quality that are required of all trades involved in the construction process. But the construction professional is also a manager of people, money, time and physical resources. The curriculum of the Construction Science and Management program endeavors to develop these skills through course offerings in general studies, Physical Science, Humanities, Business, and Architecture in addition to construction courses. Our Department Head, DrKwesi Daniels traveled to Dufuskie Island this weekend to document Gulla Geechie historic spaces with MIT grad student Wil Jones. Our historic preservation program was created to document the cultural legacy of communities, like the Gulla Geechie. We captured the Tabby ruins and the family home of Ms. Sally Ann, an eighth generation island resident. The digital documentation work they accomplished this weekend assures the spaces continue to live on virtually.

Professor Amma Asamoah is representing our department with Mae-Ling Lokko of Yale's architecture department, in Tulum, Mexico, with our students. They are studying how to create paint and dyes from plant, using a similar process Dr. Carver used to create his colors. This is a great collaboration between Tuskegee's and Yale's architecture program. More greatness to come!

This week, two of our students Jaden Adams and Jayden Woullard, alum Chanse Huff, and our Preservation Program Manager Jamal Oliver, traveled to Venice, Italy, to participate in the building of a pavilion designed jointly by Tuskegee and Morgan State architecture faculty, Amma Asamoah and Coleman Jordan, respectively. While there, they also are documenting historic Renaissance and Baroque architecture for incorporation in our Architecture History course.

This is a historic moment in the history of our architecture program. Our program is participating in the Venice Biennale and we officially launched our alumni travel abroad program! TSACS believes in working and playing hard. The WORLD is our classroom!
