Opening-day recap!! And a huge thank you to our patrons, donors, volunteers, and club members. We couldn’t do it without everyone doing their part to keep the show running, and it’s truly amazing to see all of the hard work everyone has been putting in fully realized during opening day. Today was an astounding success and testament to the work and dedication of everyone who’s been involved.

We would also like to take the time to again recognize Professor Jim Savage, to whom this year’s show was dedicated. Professor Savage has been a part of the Department of Plant Science at Penn State for 40 incredible years of service. He is not only well-accomplished but also well-loved and appreciated by his students and fellow faculty. In addition, he played an integral part in this year’s show, stepping up and serving as interim Club Advisor while Dr. Margaret Hoffman was away.

We are looking forward to another very successful day, as we are still open tomorrow from 9:00am-4:00pm. There’s still plenty of plants to go, we hope to see you there!! 🌱🌱

Preparation for our 112th annual Horticulture Show is well underway! Our dedicated Hort Show Managers have been busy driving around picking up plants, hard goods, props, and machinery for this year’s show. So far, we’ve been working on plant inventory and pricing, mulching, and preparation for a long day of hardscaping. 🪴 🧱

Shoutout! To one of our Hort Show Managers as well as Ag Student Council Representatives, Owen Maddalena! This summer Owen has worked tirelessly at Haven Landscape and Designed based in Pittsburgh, Pa. His job responsibilities included but were not limited to the managing of employees, buying and maintaining equipment, presenting jobs, adding to the companies portfolio, and “playing in dirt.” Owen learned practical skills such as making sure to include budget for job clean-ups, managing the unseen daily overhead costs for insurance, and how to properly maneuver machinery in less than ideal conditions. When asked about what he most enjoyed working he claimed it was “having the opportunity to gain skills knowledge in my chosen field, and earning a paycheck for the things I enjoy.” We are stoked to see our members gain real-world experience, and be able to use their knacks for the careers they want to pursue. We are eager to see Owen’s future success!

Spotlight! Shoutout to one of our amazing Greenhouse Managers, Lizzy Noble! This summer Lizzy worked at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens in Devon, Pa. At this free, 48-acre botanical garden and non-profit nature sanctuary, Lizzy helped in maintaining the various gardens through pruning, mowing, weeding, herbicide applications, and use of traditional IPM practices. Lizzy mentioned that working at this facility gave her a greater appreciation for the state’s native plants, and taught her the importance of removing invasive plants safely and effectively. When prompted about what she most enjoyed about her time at Jenkins, Lizzy noted, “My favorite part was working in the pond with chest waders. Removing Pickleweed, lotus, and algae was fun because I was in the water.” We are delighted to see our members explore their interests, and get first hand experiences in the green industry. We are looking forward to all the great things Lizzy will do!

Another shoutout to on of our Hort Show Managers, Zach Sharp! This summer Zach had the opportunity to work with the Arborist Team at Longwood Gardens in Kennette Square, Pa. On the job he did removals, pruning, storm cleanup, and general tree care all over Longwood’s extensive property. While working with Longwood’s professional arborists, Zach got an in depth look into the procedures for proper care and pruning techniques, he also learned about safety in the industry and what paths are available to him when it comes to Arboriculture production vs. the public garden aspect of the feild. When asked about his time there, he said he “really enjoyed the community of the team I got to work with, as well as the environment all of the Longwood employees created. It was a good place to work, and absolutely a place I would want to work again someday.” We are thrilled to have such talented members, and we wish Zach luck on his journey ahead!

Shoutout to our very own Vice President, Kylie Hogg! This past summer she has been hard at work in the famous Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa. Her responsibilities as an Outdoor Landscape Intern rotated throughout the gardens where she worked along full-time professional horticulturalist performing tasks such as planting, pruning, watering, staking, mulching, hedge trimming, and weeding. She also had the opportunity to learn about various ornamental plants, landscape design, horticulturally sound practices, and horticultural operations at a public garden. She stated her time at Longwood was incredibly rewarding and fulfilling, and that it has reinforced her goals to pursue a career in public horticulture. When asked about her favorite experiences there, she reported, “working alongside the hardworking, talented Outdoor Landscapes team, and the entire culture of Longwood as a whole. The people really make the place!” We are super excited that Kylie was able to have such a great experience, and we wish her luck on her future endeavors!
