PSU Graduate Instructors and Teaching Assistants Welcome to the PSU Graduate Instructors and Teaching Assistant page! The Schreyer Institute for Teach

Our goal is to help instructors improve students’ learning, whether the instructor is a faculty member or a graduate student. We know that TAs and other grad students who are teaching may face a unique set of challenges. Thus, in addition to our extensive workshops, programs and resources in support of good course design, implementation, and assessment, which are available to anyone teaching at Penn State, we offer resources especially for TAs and other grad students who help undergraduates learn.

How we view our students can shape the way we teach and the learning experiences we create. 💡

Join the interactive workshop, Identities We Inspire in Those We Teach, to explore how instructors and teaching assistants (TAs) can maintain a focus on growth in the classroom. From viewing students as individuals who are simply working toward a grade to recognizing the valuable perspectives and experiences they bring to the learning environment, our attitudes can make a difference in how we approach teaching.

This workshop will also encourage instructors and TAs to reflect on their own perspectives and consider how they can inspire growth in their students while continuing to grow in their own teaching practices.

Teaching or TAing a course can sometimes mean navigating difficult conversations, controversy, and unexpected tensions in the classroom.

SITE has created a new resource specifically for graduate students: “Dealing with Controversy and Tensions in Classes You Teach: Resources Especially for Grad Students.” The Canvas resource features short videos and practical guidance to help graduate students navigate challenging moments in their teaching.

The resource was developed in response to a request from Graduate Council, with contributions from Chas Brua, Beate Brunow, John Elia, Jose Sandoval-Llanos, Alia Shalaby, and Deena Levy.
